The Night That Hell Broke Loose The Night That Hell Broke Loose
Works of this genre often do best when they express as artefacts, connecting with the programmatic project, fostering a livid central theme. Eg Lustmord "..The Black Stars Hang" and Time Machines' eponymous release. Ordeal joins these works. It's not just "dark ambient" music, all floating form and drone . Shrine turns this work into so much more: into a beautiful, enveloping, engulfing tone poem, which somehow recalls to me Smetana's Die Moldau more than anything. Exquisitely mixed.

Some works just stand out instantly above the rest and it's hard to articulate exactly why. This takes me on a cerebral high, very subtle, very strange. A rollercoaster of effects and momentary hallucinations ending in an involuntary moan emanating directly from the brainstem.

This album is awesome! Where a lot of synthwave/retrowave stuff I listen to tends to sound somewhat anaemic or metallic, due to a preponderance of brittle rhythm sections and keyboard riffing aiming at a minimal sound, what makes Atlas stand out are its honey-dripping lush orchestral keyboard scapes crafted around gorgeous chordal arrangements hanging off a backbone of rich, deep rhythm and bass. Literally takes me right back to 1984. It's like a time machine!

I came to Black Cab only in 2016 thanks to 3RRR. I missed out somehow until now and what a shame :( I don't know exactly what makes Black Cab such an amazing sound, I can't quite put my finger on it but I'm listening all the time and am busy collecting the back catalogue. Can't wait for more!

There's so much energy in this - it's frenetic and beguiling, the clanging of bells, the metallurgy of the basses and timbres, the plays of dissonance and dynamics - it's invigorating, it shimmers, it takes me over, it's like a thundercloud showering cold rain or like the birth of a star. On the liminal edges of sleep it fucks with your hypnagogia. I'm fascinated by this album.

When the Australian electronic music scene was ruled by the likes of Models, Pseudo Echo, I'm Talking, Machinations; Severed Heads instead took us to a whole other level, a parallel universe as addictive as nicotine.
