    Disappointment Disappointment
The music of James Revels is inventive, cinematic, glitchy, poppy, and dreamy all at once. The tracks on his latest compilation, Sketch Book 4, alternate between frenetic and meditative tones, and there’s a distinctly koto-esque flavor to his arrangements. There’s also something jazzy about the tracks, and Revels reveals himself throughout the proceedings to be as adept at toying with dynamics as he is with melodies and arrangements.

  4. Sickle/Hammer
    by Spirits
    track 00:00/00:00
XTC meets Crowded House with some gorgeous backing vocals a la the Beautiful South. Some nice, fat synths in there, too. And listen for a wonderful lyrical sentiment at around the two-minute mark: "Harvest the moon. The darkness will digest the light."
  5. When We Collide
    by Baker Man
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    Keeping Score Keeping Score
The six tracks on Baker Man's When We Collide drift between the rough-hewn indie pop of early REM and the grinding garage punk of Dinosaur Jr. I also hear hints of the Decemberists and Ben Folds. These are the guys you saw performing in your buddy's basement or your favorite dive bar in college. Smart lyrics, jangly guitars, and a healthy dose of world-weary cynicism.
  6. Carolina Blue

    Funky Cola Funky Cola
Love the late 80s vibe, especially on Funky Cola. Hints of Pet Shop Boys, New Order, and Electronic. And Will Ferrell & Chris Kattan's Night at the Roxbury guys would love the dance tracks.
  7. Ashes To Ashes
