  1. UNLOVED Soundtrack
    by WHAT iS VALiS
    Furfur Furfur
This is music to listen to while lying on your back, on wriggling hardwood, and watching the concrete ceiling dance.

Tracks are both active and crushing, with each one conveying a different kind of pressure.

Furfur is the most beautiful track, to me, because at 2:15, it just - splits open, there's no other way to describe it. If you like music that rattles around on the inside of your skull, this is absolutely worth listening to, even if you've never played UNLOVED.
  2. Alter
    by Kriss
    Obsessed Obsessed
The emotions throughout the entirety of Mother are something sublime. But then Obsessed caught me by the throat and wouldn't let go.

Vandrer feels like faint strips of electric lighting placed like old hands, guiding you through a building you've never been in, with no windows or doors.

All of which make me very excited for the full release.

  3. Bug Fables Soundtrack
    by Tristan Alric
The Giants' Lair The Giants' Lair
Cute, familiar, mischievous and enigmatic - with a few haunting pieces, on top of that. A perfect OST for a perfect game.
  4. Stars In The Sea
    by Eugnosis
Stars In The Sea Stars In The Sea
A two-track voyage through a digital sea. I always wonder if the journey I get through music is what the creator intended, what they felt..?

Like boarding a lonely freighter in the inky black night, with only reflections in the water to guide you - and that's fine, and well, and good.
  5. The Early Bird Becomes The Worm
    by Eugnosis
    Starless Age Starless Age
Starless Age is so good. Seriously, listen to it right now.

The whole album is alight with good tracks, though. The finisher, Atlantis Ember, is also amazing.
  6. Airshow
    by Eugnosis
Dawn Approaching Avalon Dawn Approaching Avalon
My favourite artists are always experimenting. Dawn Approaching Avalon is at once a huge departure from the milieu of Eugnosis' work, while being instantly familiar?

I can't think of higher praise then hearing something totally different then what you're used to, and still knowing who made it.

Airshow is a really comforting album, even when you've landed and pulled back the curtains, glancing behind the scenes.
  7. Green Glass Simulacra
    by Eugnosis
    Dead Channel Dead Channel
Talk about a difficult album to choose a favourite for. Eugnosis has a lot of different sounds here, and with Glass Doll and the titular Green Glass Simulacra both being standouts, it was difficult for me. (Concept Citizen is great, too!)

Excellent experimental late night sounds, beamed right to your ears.
  8. Midvale
    by Eugnosis
Sign Of The Way Sign Of The Way
I've owed this album a review for some time; life got busy, but the sound helped carry me forward. Time to pay that back.

If you listen to Midvale out of order, you'd feel like each track is different, but familiar. As a unified whole...

The sound is something else. A demo reel for a town that never existed except in flybys, a late night public television serial never put to VHS, let alone DVD or streaming services.

The mix of industrial sound, drones, and warm ambience is astounding.
  9. Exhilarate & Disgust
    by vPROJEKT
    Young Blood Young Blood
I immediately want to draw comparisons, all of them positive. But Exhilarate & Disgust is an aural beatdown that adjusts your senses slowly and with terrible grace.

Exhilarate & Disgust is being trapped in an overgrown cybernetics factory, your senses replaced and expanding, and finding the beauty in the whole experience.

Inflect Infinity is also a top track, for me.
  10. amuse-bouche
    by Khate
    Soup Soup
If Apertif was an apertif, amuse-bouche is a feast; this is another good album (appropriately) to sample to see if Khate's sound is something you'd like. It's got a little bit of everything, making it hard to pick a favourite.

Sunny Nebulae and Bat House Gamelan, for example - it's a really good album, with plenty of flavour. Give it a listen.
  11. Apertif
    by Khate
    Rain Rain
Apertif ends up feeling like it could be a collection soundtrack for an old, experimental game. Don't ask me what the genre is, but - one with big clunky polygons, that people discuss long after it's returned to the shadows of the subconscious.

The Gettin' Place closes the album perfectly, better then most apertifs I've had.
  12. 13
    by Khate
    Steak Den Steak Den
Not much to say here other then that I love Steak Den, the intro, heh. Cluster of Stars is also really, really good.
  13. Phi
    by Khate
    Trichotomic Trichotomic
1 X 1 reminds me of Digital Eel's sound in the best of ways, but I think Trichotomic is my standout, here. It sits at the interstice of industrial and field recordings and feels familiar, yet not.

Which is to say, I like it!
  14. Ononharoia
    by Khate
    Cicada Queen Cicada Queen
Unquestionably my favourite track, but also another album where the sound tells a story. You might have to shake your brain a few time to hear it, but that's what music is for.

Scratchy warmth and rewards for the patient.
  15. Pareidolia
    by Khate
    Additives Additives
A hard tie between Additives and Comforting the Meat... Might not be a coincidence, if you give both a good listen. It took me a few listens to really appreciate this album, but it's deep like a wishing well in space.

Get lost in the sound. It'll turn out all right, in the end.
  16. Lazarus taxa 2
    by Khate
    Klezmah Klezmah
NOISE. There's a line in the album desc, about old-school fans? Yeah. Most definitely. If you like walls of sound that collate together, you're going to love these taxa.

'Disgusting' and 'Three Note' are also, just... Fantastic.
  17. Lazarus taxa 1
    by Khate
    Trains Trains
Like the description says, these taxa are almost entirely natural, even organic in composition. Natural sounds and errata become something quite like peace. It's hard to pick a favourite, especially when tracks like 'Prayer, Holywater' and 'They Took Her Off The Pills' are so strong; it's a great album. 'Nuff said!
  18. the sun is dark but the moon is bright
    by Khate
    Ex Mass Ex Mass
It was VERY hard not to pick Rage.

This album is pretty unique, I guess you could say it's glued together differently, at some points. The sound is more interstellar, but somehow more down to earth?

It feels kind of like a conflux of styles present in other Khate albums. I feel like if I had to recommend one album for new listeners, it'd be 'the sun is dark but the moon is bright.'

    So, what'cha waiting for?
  19. Field Report
    by Khate
    Black Bog Black Bog
Field Report is an album I can't describe as to why I love it so much. What a jumble of words - just.

    Listen to Black Bog.

There's a whole story of sound there, and if it means as much to you as it means to me, you'll treasure this album.
  20. Indivisible (Original Game Soundtrack)
    by Scarlet Moon Records
    Ajna Ajna
A very good soundtrack for an exceptional game. Can't believe I didn't have a rec up for it, yet!
