Every period of Soft Machine has special qualities (OK, except the unfortunate 1981 recording), and this -- post Wyatt, post Hopper, post Dean, pre Holdsworth and Babbington -- allows a sharp focus on the interplay between Jenkins and Ratledge. Some of the compositions are world class, in many ways superior to their earlier work.
