With almost every new HM album, there is a track that joins the ranks of my all-time favorites. This time it's Graphite as a Color. Nightly Review is up there too.
So many good tracks here. Sundial, Contra, Mine Sweeper, Tracer. My favorite album so far from BB. As far as I can see, he's in a league of his own in terms of coherently incarnating creative visions that are beyond the boundaries of current culture. I don't know of any other artist who is this decisively otherworldly creative.
This album gives me the type of shock that I haven't experienced since first discovering retrowave in 2015, because I'm blown away by the degree of intense authentic 80s emotion in some of these songs. I can barely believe songs like this are being made unironically in 2023. But the fact that they are gives me hope that the human soul can overcome the cynicism and nihilism of modern life. The album photo might be the most 80s thing I've ever seen. And the pan flutes in Causeway are transcendent.
