  4. Monkey Trial
    by Hardscore
"Hardscore" reminds me somewhat of "HardArt", which is a John Elmquist project, likewise on the avantgarde territory. This album is a twisted story about Buba the monkey and other weird characters, and the talk intermissions get candidates for skipping tracks very soon. However, there's still quite a bit mind-blowing music left anyway. Belgian avantgarde at its best!
  5. Dangerous Liquids

  6. Dux in a Row
    by Rascal Reporters
One of Our Dogs is Missing One of Our Dogs is Missing
The "Rascal Reporters" slowly have become one of my top favorite prog bands, because they are way beside the standard prog path, which has become 50% rifferama + 50% boredom. Steve Kretzmer and Steve Gore are geniuses of the same kind, and James Strain, who recently entered the band as an additional composer, clearly is on par with them. This is complex and demanding prog, but always with a unique entertaining component.
  7. Merry Christmas
    by Big Big Train
I'm suffering from a severe allergy against Christmas rock songs, and on this track, my eyebrows are raising automatically, as soon as the children's choir kicks in. But hey, on the bottom line, it's one of the less cringeworthy Christmas products.
  8. Snowfalls
    by Big Big Train
Greg Spawton does quite better with his Christmas contribution than David Longdon. This should have been the A-side of the single, but well... who am I to say that... just thinking aloud...
  9. Common Ground
    by Big Big Train
    Atlantic Cable Atlantic Cable
The album takes off nicely with David Longdon's "The Strangest Times", but then gets into immediate free fall and deeply underwater for the next few tracks, quite unexpectedly. Fortunately, it recovers with Nick D'Virgilio's "Apollo" (hey, this guy CAN write good music, although he hides this ability most of the time) and the remaining three tracks, one of which is another Longdon masterpiece. So in the end the final impression is somewhat in the positive range.
  10. Animals Acoustic
    by TTNG
I wasn't sure if I would like this album - but yes, I do! The acoustic guitar is the leading instrument here, and things really get brilliant when the classical chamber ensemble joins in.
