  1. Bellum I
    by Aquilus
    Eternal Unrest Eternal Unrest
Aquilus took a decade off and came back like he never left! Bellum I is yet another piece of beautiful melodic black metal mixed with classical and folk that makes you wanna dance naked in a forest somewhere. The natural sounding production increases the atmosphere heavily. Griseus is a monumental black metal album for me but Bellum I isn't far behind. Can't wait for II!
  2. Verses In Oath
    by Hulder
Cast Into The Well Of Remembrance Cast Into The Well Of Remembrance
Verses in Oath is the perfect embodiement of the second wave black metal sound. Raw production, melodic riffage and subtle synth work that creates a medieval/vampyric atmosphere. This one brings The Principle of Evil Made Flesh and Dark Medieval Times to mind the most. Vemod and Spectral Voice are close but this is AOTY for me until something else knocks it off. Stunning album. My full review: www.sputnikmusic.com/review/88189/Hulder-Verses-In-Oath/
  3. Magician's Gambit
    by Wizards of Aldur
The Vale of Aldur II The Vale of Aldur II
Top tier dungeon/fantasy synth right here. I get bored with a lot of dungeon synth after a while but this album flows so well and is 100% engaging the whole time with a soaring medieval atmosphere. Glad I decided to give this a shot.
  4. Mirror in Darkness
    by Serpent Column
    Ausweg Ausweg
What a BEAST of an album. When it comes to blending black metal and mathcore, these guys and Hoplites are the clear leaders of the pack. This album is sheer annihilation of everything in it's path. Pure chaos and destruction. And it is beautiful.
  5. Maiden Voyage
    by Amalia Bloom
    Impasse Impasse
Found this album on a list on another website that I've frequented for the past almost 2 decades (sputnikmusic.com) and I am blown away. Amalia Bloom take part emo, part pop punk and part blackgaze and create a piece of art that is short but so damn sweet. This is why I love music. Something unexpected always comes along and knocks your socks off. Maiden Voyage is one of those albums for me.
  6. The Deepening
    by Vemod
    The Deepening The Deepening
Good lord this is one of the most epic and immersive albums I've ever heard in my life. The natural production gives off feelings of the first 3 classic Agalloch albums, veering more towards the frosty realm of something like Pale Folklore. Atmospheric black metal can get redundant, but The Deepening will have you enaged until it ends with the mammoth title track. Then you hit repeat and do it all over again. My full review: www.sputnikmusic.com/review/88109/Vemod-The-Deepening/.
  7. Παραμαινομένη
    by Ὁπλίτης
Συμμαινόμεναι Διονύσῳ Ἐλευθέριῳ Συμμαινόμεναι Διονύσῳ Ἐλευθέριῳ
This guy is a fucking MACHINE! I mean seriously, this dude does not stop and I think this is his best yet. He went more experimental on this one and it blends perfectly with the annihilation and chaos of his already amazing black metal/mathcore combo. DAT SAX!!!
  8. Asylums Lament
    by Stuporous
Never Let Me Go Never Let Me Go
Absolutely killer and heavily atmospheric black/death/doom that reminds me a lot of Worm mixed with My Dying Bride, which can never be a bad thing. The doom parts are melancholic and very gothic inflenced, the black metal parts are ferocious as hell and the death metal parts are fucking face rippers. Awesome from beginning to end.
  9. How Can You Smile Like That...Murderer
    by DEATH ZOMBIE FROM HELL
Art the Clown Kills Them All Art the Clown Kills Them All
Fucking SICK brutal death metal that reminds me a lot of Nithing and Afterbirth with some Gorerotted thrown in too. Idk if the drumming is programmed but holy shit it is bonkers. Super fun album in general and also short and sweet. This is everything you could ask for in a brutal death metal album.
  10. Candela
    by Svdestada
    Candela Candela
These guys are on to something with the mix of atmospheric black, crust and post-hardcore. It's an agressive whirlwind of riffs and blast beats but also knows how to be epic and drenched in a hypnotic atmosphere such as on the massive title track. An emotional rollercoaster in every sense of the word.
  11. Divine Laughter
    by Cave Sermon
    Liquid Gold Liquid Gold
Early AOTY contender right here folks. This is some massive sounding post-black/sludge metal with a suffocating atmosphere. These riffs hit you in the mouth like Mike Tyson and the vocals are powerful and filthy as fuck. Cave Sermon has given us a delayed Christmas gift with this one.
  12. Bury Me In Winter
    by Forlorat
    The Choice The Choice
Epic atmospheric black metal with heavy folk and melodeath influences. Kinda sounds like what you'd get if Immortal and Eluveitie had a love child. Stunning melodic riffs and passionate, varied vocals. A lot to love about this debut, looking forward to future releases.
  13. O'discordia
    by w i n t e r q u i l t
    O'discordia (feat fire-toolz) O'discordia (feat fire-toolz)
I've been listening to black metal for almost two decades and I've yet to hear something quite like this. A mixture of black metal with vaporwave and ambient should not work this well and yet Winterquilt does it to perfection. Extremely engaging and soothing atmosphere that's easy to get lost in. Do you wanna dance to glitchy beats while also wearing corpsepaint in a snow covered forest? This is the album for you.
  14. Floating in Timeless Streams
    by Lie in Ruins
    The Path The Path
This is honestly one of my favorite death metal albums of the past few years. Chunky production and a shit ton of great riffs with an atmosphere that sounds exactly how the cover art looks. Swampy, desolate and all around brutal.
  15. Protozoan Battle Hymns
    by Rhododendron
Last of the Painted Hills Last of the Painted Hills
Psychedelic, noisy, progressive, experimental, epic, hypnotic....there's too many words to describe this amazing album. And words themselves don't do it justice. Do yourself a favor, turn this on and drift away.
  16. I Have Lived Like An Animal, But I Will Die Like An Angel
    by BONE DANCE
    Black Tongues Black Tongues
One of the most intense mixtures of hardcore and sludge that I've ever heard. Just an absolute face ripper from start to finish. The sheer emotion and hatred seeps from the pores of this album.
  17. King Cryptid
    by Crusty Old Toad
Grumpy Old Drac Grumpy Old Drac
Don't let the gimmick fool you, this is an absolute riff fest. This album is heavily rooted in traditional heavy metal with some post-black metal tendencies and the occasional blast beats and tremz while the vocals are more traditional black metal croaks. Will definitely be diving into the whole discog after this.
  18. Our Heaven Amongst the Stars
    by Phantom Spire
Sky Rent Asunder Sky Rent Asunder
I've never heard a band quite like Phantom Spire. Yeah "dreamy" black metal is a thing but this band just has an extra hazy tone about them that enhances the dream pop tendencies that they happen to veer towards. This band is what I'd imagine would be playing in a tavern somewhere in Middle Earth. Stunning on all levels and Phantom Spire hasn't disappointed me yet.
  19. Tradition
    by Black Shaman
    The Calling The Calling
This is so fucking good. I have been really underwhelmed with some combinations of black and doom metal but Black Shaman does not fall into the disappointing category. This album is exactly how it should be done and the droning ambient bits add heavily to the atmosphere. Well done Black Shaman, well done.
  20. Det Österbottniska Mörkret
    by Ondfødt
    Falskhejtins Folk Falskhejtins Folk
I've been on the hunt for more pagan black metal in the vein of Kawir recently and this album is really hitting the spot in that regard. Somehow missed this earlier in the year but glad I'm circling back to it now. This thing is full of epic riffs and battle chants from the highest peaks. Ondfødt give you everything you could ask for in a pagan black metal album and then some.
