Try To Make It Try To Make It
For me and my crusty, ringing ears, the tribute album lost it's charm long ago. But once in a while, there's still one that hits it outta the park. When the subject is as great as SLOAN, it's a can't lose proposition. I've never heard the majority of the acts here (tho I'm a big fan of Fireking), but damned if I hear a duff track on this set. If you're already a fan of the Halifax Heroes don't think twice, nab this 31 track monster! Another winner from Futureman.

    Chewing Ice Chewing Ice
I'm guessing I'm tardy to the party here, I nabbed "Force of Nurture", their 2nd, before this. My mistake! "Force" is a rarity, a follow up album that tops the debut, but if you like one of 'em, you'll like the other. Win-Win!!!.
  24. Phantoms Ringing 67-73
    by Rocket Bureau
    00:00/00:00
    Clarabelle Clarabelle
Rocket Bureau is Kyle Motor's (aka Kyle Urban) solo opus. The guy can play pretty much anything, and does so on this fine album. Pop hooks galore, all recorded solo in Kyle's swanky Madison, Wisconsin basement studio. Analog, of course!

He had me with the line "Oh Clarabelle, oh what the hell?"

Also check out Kyle's main band, The Motorz for sublimely crunchy power pop.

Ain't Gonna Find Ain't Gonna Find
Produced by Tommy Stinson! That factoid alone should make power popheads ears perk up.. One of my Top albums of '15. My fave tracks are "Ain't Gonna Find" and the lengthy closer "Great Southern Rail". Milwaukee>>> Madison corridor is a fertile r&r breeding ground, so there's lots more out there..Sugar Stems, The Hussy, Midwest Beat, Phylums, Rocket Bureau/ Motorz, Platinum Boys, along with many more. Dig deep, you will dig what you find!
But "Force Of Nuture" is the cream of the recent crop

    Shenorock Lane Shenorock Lane
Jay is the multi-instrumentalist secret weapon of Drive-By Truckers. But this is nothing like DBT, not by a long shot. It's pure pop, stretched out as a suite.. Grab the swanky etched vinyl !2", and check out Jay's "Mess Of Happiness" for more of the same.

So You Say You Lost Your Baby So You Say You Lost Your Baby
DOUBLE DAMN! This is right in my wheelhouse, my favorite studio album of 2015 by far! Heavily influenced by Cheap Trick & Elvis Costello, 2 discs of crunchy power pop, with emphasis on POWER. The 2 x 12" vinyl's pricey, but beautifully done,The double CD is a bargain. I love this album so much I bought both! Did I mention the drummer wears a fez???

The Shivvers - No Substitute The Shivvers - No Substitute
Yeah, I live in Walkerstan, mebbe I'm prejudiced. But there isn't a naff tune on this album (or Vol 1, Texas, for that matter) The Shivvers track is the highlight (check out their album on Sing Sing Records), but this LP is chock full o' poptastic tunes!
  33. Radio Ready - Lost Power Pop Hits 1978-1983: Texas, Vol 1
by Radio Ready - Texas, Vol 1

The Pengwins - What You Gonna Do The Pengwins - What You Gonna Do
If you can stop playing the opening track by The Pengwins long enough to listen to the rest of this LP, you'll be rewarded by a gusher of powerpop perfection. Who'd have guessed Texas had a wellspring of powerpop? Grab this and Vol 2 :Wisconsin for a sweet treat. And cross yer fingers that the Cheap Rewards label rises from the dead and continues this series!

    by Futureman Records

    I Can't Reach You I Can't Reach You
Too bad this never got released in a real format. The Who's best album (IMHO). A flock of good bands do justice to the original, plus some of the bonus reissue tracks as well. No, it's not even close to the original, but the acts treat the original material with respect, passion, and a great sense of fun.
  35. Tenderness Flowers Taught Me
    by Kyle Motor
    00:00/00:00
Go Back To Sleep Go Back To Sleep
Kyle is the frontman for Madison's Motorz, & plays pretty much anything for several local bands. He's also produced The Midwest Beat, Phylums,& The August Teens. And he's a nice guy to boot! Give this album a shot, I bet you'll dig it. And watch out for Kyle's solo project, Rocket Bureau, coming soon to a Bandcamp near you!
