  9. Schleifen
    by Steinbrüchel
Steinbruchel’s best release to date? His signature sound is fully on display, but this piece works within a more subtle cyclic pattern. It seems to reduce to a thin and extended thread, practically a single note before delicate re-entry to the broader and more complex frame.

Careful listening will also intermittently reveal (apparently the author’s) voice within these cycles, as a near quiet exhale of breath. It’s just another subtle effect that works well here.

Until COVID-19 passes, we adapt to more indoor life, hopefully staying safe. Here is comfort of deep listening and minimal electronica, best suited for indoor spaces. This also satisfies my "darker is better" need.
  11. Sketch for Winter (version2)

A narrow and selected choice, for completeness and to go alongside the original release.

I love this material from the early 2000's, and you really don't hear it anymore. It is a few well chosen and thoroughly explored frequencies with few embellishments. Call it a stripped down sound if you'd like.

Revisiting this album, am finding volume reveals subtler intricacies and layering to explore.

Any stylistic metronomic beginnings where works begin are lovingly intervened. This is listening for attention for micro pattern variations.
  14. Sketch for Winter (2002)
    by RICHARD CHARTIER
As are many works in this low-key, minimalist genre, am reminded of a time and place when either first listened, or the piece started hitting home. A very quiet and personal work, needing concentration and without distractions, is usually difficult, but the short duration of this piece makes this often doable.
  15. Undefined
by YANN NOVAK + RICHARD CHARTIER
It’s a must have, and the contributions of the artists in this collaboration is decisive. That is, I can detect each artists contribution. And this time around, you don’t necessarily need headphones to get the full impact of the depth of the piece.
