This rivals Primitive Man for heaviest and darkest project within the sludge/doom metal landscape. Absolutely primal in its approach.

Extremely blood-curdling vocals are a fantastic wake-up call to ready you for this top notch take on sludge metal tinged by metalcore-ish instrumentation and writing, a style formerly only dominated by LoveSexMachine, Black Sheep Wall and Admiral Angry.

If you want traditional style black metal in terms of its instrumentation and overall songwriting style, these guys are the best right now.

Extremely creative riff-writing, unparalleled musicianship, seamless song structures, and fantastic choice in atmospheric introductions. The opening riff to this title track floored me, and the intro (before the band itself comes in) will haunt and soothe me forever.

Something changed in me when a friend showed me Pile. I used to only connect with rock music that was either weird, technical, or abrasive. This band feels very human and all the songwriting/performances are clear yet surprisingly-engaging windows into their life experiences, while also being thematic puzzleboxes. The songwriting flawlessly develops your interest and takes it for a ride, ending with lessons that never feel forced.

THIS is how you be emotional without being 'emo'.

Mizmor has grown tremendously from the one-man passion project it started as. It is the only black metal project that sends me into the imaginative trances that I usually get with more psychedelic metal; its grandiose, atmospheric, and cinematic songwriting make it a deeply consuming and involved experience without resorting to the same spacey riff-writing that I'm used to.

Phantom Glue will always amaze as much as they confuse. A neon green blood flows through their characterful, yet impactful riff-writing. Their song structures are like little concept albums in and of themselves; each directing the little music video in your mind, like a comic book with a hand that reaches out of the pages and tries its absolute hardest to trap you inside. They somehow accomplish all this while making your body involuntarily groove to the explosive rhythms and chord progressions.
