I think Julien Baker's work boils down to two main themes: Love, and Honesty. She is totally, almost brutally, honest with her audience about her pain and confusion. However, underpinning it all there seems to be a drive to love people and love herself, and much of her pain is derived from love for others. This album acts as a totally emotional exposition of the human experience without being pretentious. People matter; life is hard.
