MESSA - Hellhound On My Trail MESSA - Hellhound On My Trail
MESSA is one of those bands that I have up on a marble pedestal. This stripped-down acoustic offering from a black metal band known for its demoness-fairy vocals and raw power chords from hell is... magic. I could easily peg it as a remastered track from some boxcar-era Americana collection.

    Magic Water Magic Water
Straight-up classic psych medal, the kind that gets back to the roots of the genre. Each track really speaks to how well this band works as a whole, and how much effort they put in to bring their talents to the fore to put out excellent, rhythmic sound.

La Sacerdotisa Gris La Sacerdotisa Gris
As soon as I heard this demo tape, I jumped onto the band's FB like a creep and asked when they're going on tour. This is, as I keep telling my friends, church music for metal heads. Hauntingly beautiful.

    Prehistoric Bitch Prehistoric Bitch
A band that rocks hard, period. Beautiful melodic vocals, music that goes back to the hard rock basics of pounding out good clean rhythms with drums and guitars. A bit of fuzz on the riffs, if you're only familiar with mainstream/old-school music, think Heart meets Zep.

by The Steady As She Goes
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    Mutatis Mutandis Mutatis Mutandis
I need this on vinyl! I need this live! I NEED THIS PERMANENTLY ETCHED ON THE INSIDE OF MY SKULL!!! This is where rhythm & blues meets sludgey-doom metal. This aboriginal-throat-singing-fueled dusty goodness is like the Raveonettes meets a bad 'shroom trip led by the last vestiges of the early 90s Australian grunge scene a la Died Pretty!
  22. Fire of the Spirit

    Annointing Oil Annointing Oil
"Fire of the Spirit" is nothing short of hymns to spirit walk through November to. This is a powerful marriage of black metal and Appalachian spiritualism, a thing that seeps into your soul and demands a reckoning. A lone acoustic guitar ushers you between muttering churchgoers to brutal, driving chords, back to the stories of a crazed backwoods shaman coming down from a toke with an arcangel.
  23. Nachthexen

    Nachthexen Nachthexen
Nice, driving grungy rhythm, punctuated by the occasional high choral vocals in the distance. Long but good intro to doom mental. Excellent for road trips.
  24. Mingling EP
    by NO SHOES
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    Raindrops Raindrops
Ethreal electro grunge: fuzzy dirty riffs meet swirling trance rock. The whole band shouting and chanting the lyrics in unison gives a very Greek Chorus feel to this distinctly Brooklyn sound.
  25. Party Poetry (Billy Milktruck Drops the Meth Bomb) SINGLE
    by NO SHOES
    track 00:00/00:00
A solid groove that makes you move in your seat, grungy and fuzzy and noisy and deeply rhythmic. Quintessential listening for anyone who wants to hear a the sounds of band that plays to a packed show in a studio apartment in the boroughs.
