up all night up all night
Not a great album, but definitely an interesting start. Some good stuff, but also some really grating experiments. I appreciate Will's willingness (no pun intended) to mess around and release whatever, even if he's ashamed of this release. But that mindset still exists today. MADLO is very similar to 1 in its experimental, fragmented nature, as well as its inconsistencies.

the ghost of bob saget the ghost of bob saget
The best of the numbered albums by far. 3 might be the popular pick, but this album is far more consistent, reaches far greater heights, and has a genuinely good sound. It's the first of his albums where there's an argument to be had that the lo-fi nature doesn't completely hamper the experience. It's not as good as practically everything that'd come after, but it's an enjoyable experience for what it is.
  8. To See the Next Part of the Dream
    by Parannoul
흰천장 (White Ceiling) 흰천장 (White Ceiling)
Amazing. It's harsh yet beautiful, both in terms of its supreme sound and emotional lyricism. The production is incredibly lo-fi, which may be a turn off to some, but it works. AOTY
  9. Nervous Young Man
    by Car Seat Headrest
The Gun Song The Gun Song
Like How to Leave Town, this is another of Will's Bandcamp albums that's actually better than Twin Fantasy. This is where his recording quality no longer really detracted too much from the overall experience. The whole album is so epic, and while it may lack the cohesion of his other masterpieces, it more than makes up for that in brevity.
  10. A Beginner's Mind
by Sufjan Stevens & Angelo De Augustine

  11. Teens Of Denial

Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales
Will trades in some of his signature quirky lyricism for more detail and concision. The result is an album which wears its influences more obviously and feels less unique than his Bandcamp classics, but which ultimately is his greatest achievement. In terms of specific, vivid, witty lyricism and track-to-track consistency, this is the best rock album in over a decade. It's his masterpiece, and I don't think he realizes just how great it is.
  12. Carrie & Lowell
    by Sufjan Stevens
Fourth of July Fourth of July
Not my favorite Sufjan release (I still prefer the two states albums), but it is his most emotional and lyrical. I like the grandiose nature of some of his other releases, but there's always room in my heart for a more stripped-back, personal record. For a person as complicated as Carrie, this was a great way to honor her as she truly was. It's sad, but life is sad, and there's little else out there as comforting as this.
  13. How To Leave Town
    by Car Seat Headrest
The Ending of Dramamine The Ending of Dramamine
This is Car Seat Headrest's most consistent album (or EP, whatever Will), showcasing Will's most emotional lyricism, while perfecting his signature self-aware sense of humor. His use of electronics gives it a distinct atmosphere that stands out in his discography. Written concurrently with Teens of Denial, his other magnum opus, the lower audio quality and lack of hooks holds this one back compared to Teens, but it's damn close.
  14. Monomania
    by Car Seat Headrest
    Souls Souls
Twin Fantasy was that rare lightning-in-a-bottle-moment album that comes along and captures the feelings of a generation, and while immature, managed to perfectly portray the feelings of an ending relationship. Monomania comes across as bitter and underdeveloped in comparison, lacking real introspection. While Will Toledo's ability to write amazing hooks and song structures saves this album, a couple individual songs work much better than the concept as a whole.

I CAN TALK WITH MY EYES SHUT I CAN TALK WITH MY EYES SHUT
Probably my least favorite CSH album. There's just too much here that isn't interesting, and it's way too long. That being said, there's still some absolute standout material here.
  17. Twin Fantasy
    by Car Seat Headrest
    Beach Life-In-Death Beach Life-In-Death
A phenomenal remake of one of the best indie releases of all time. While that version's youthful and soul-crushing account of the end of his relationship in-the-moment means more to me, this version's more mature and bittersweet look upon the events are just as potent. Nervous Young Inhumans could use a better monologue, but Will crushed it with the new version of Famous Prophets, which is probably the best song here in regards to the themes and concepts of the remake.
