  2. ABDUCTUM - The Unrevealed Truth
    by Abductum
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    Mantricide Mantricide
A solid heavy metal album, but not extraordinary. The lead track, Mantricide, is what I'd consider the album's strongest song and it sets the tone for the remaining tracks - good but without any specific highlights, consistent but no lights particularly brighter than the rest. And call me pedantic if you will, but I personally have a little trouble getting past the accented English in the vocals at times.
  3. ABDUCTUM - Behold The Man
    by Abductum
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
The Mirror of Simple Souls The Mirror of Simple Souls
My immediate reaction upon hearing this album is that the band have switched up the guts and aggression! As such, I feel Behold The Man is a far superior album to Abductum's previous work and it's good to see them doing what all serious bands try to do - refine and improve their skills.
As for the accented vocals - it's much easier to digest when performed with greater aggression and attitude, evidenced here!

  5. Legend EP
    by Abigail Williams
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
The Conqueror Wyrm The Conqueror Wyrm
So it begins (well, except for the demo, Gallow Hill, released in '05)... I dunno what it is about Abigail Williams that seems to set them apart and above most other black metal bands out there - perhaps my ears hear a greater presence of tunefulness and melody that they can't detect in others. Whatever the case, this is dramatic and mind destroying!
  6. Onward to Annihilation
    by ABOMINANT
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
Conquerors of Dust Conquerors of Dust
I'm sure many would argue that these thrashy death-type metal bands all sound the same and to be fair I can see where they're coming from (I honestly think all hip-hop sounds the same, for example). So what is it about some of these bands that appeals to me so strongly while others are utterly "meh..."? I dunno. Frankly, I don't care. I just immerse myself in what I do like. And I really rock out to Abominant!!

Trapeze (feat. Jakub Zytecki) Trapeze (feat. Jakub Zytecki)
Okay, the Devin Townsend Project influence is only too obvious, but I say if you're gonna wear your influences on your sleeve you can't go wrong if you choose the best! And Devin Townsend IS the best (my greatest personal hero in all existence). So all in all, Above The Earth have created an extraordinary EP, utterly faultless, every track a gem! Your collection would be incomplete without this...
  9. Every Moment
    by Above The Earth
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    Starlight Lane Starlight Lane
While the once-obvious influence is still somewhat present there's been an injection of extra presence by Aleksandra (what a cutie, eh!) which sees her vocals becoming a more prominent part of the sound and seems set to steer Above The Earth onto their own more self-defined path in the future. We shall see, I guess, and we shall all look forward to doing so!

Good godDAMN! Take all your expectations of a top notch stoner metal album, raise 'em sky high and Through The Dusty Paths Of Our Lives will still surpass and redefine 'em! Let the bass smack you full on and vibrate its way through you 'til it liquifies your insides!

Heavy, sludgey, doomy, cranky. It may be slow off the mark, and its cruising speed may never be in danger of redlining the engine, but once it's out on the road it may lull you into a rhythmic trance before running you over!

(Yeah, I got lazy and copied/pasted my review for Tomb Of Feathers - but it still fits just fine.)

I Take My Path I Take My Path
This is a great album of tracks caught somewhere between NWOBHM nostalgia and a more modern power metal feel - probably leaning a little more heavily on the former than the latter, though. At times the vocals remind me of a young Joe Elliott, particularly on "By The Blade" which would've been my pick for the album favourite... until the album's closing track totally turned my head inside out! What an absolute ripper of a song!

As much as I dislike making obvious statements, sometimes it can't be avoided and at the risk of sounding like a cliché I must state that Acolyte to Opeth comparisons ring loud and true. Before you roll your eyes up, let me just say that the statement is an incredibly favourable one! If you like Opeth, Okera and/or any of their peers you will definitely be an immediate Acolyte fan, especially if the idea of lack of clean vocals appeals to you! Don't waste time, cram your metalhead with Acolyte!

    Kill Switch Kill Switch
Electronic instrumental music as it should be - waves of atmospheric synths washing through tunes that have actual melodies and rhythm! None of that modern mainstream crap (ie, boring, repetitive beats with a few tuneless dits and bleeps tacked on and a sample of some idiot saying some pointlessly obscene phrase over and over). Love those electronic handclaps too!

Toward the Empyrean Toward the Empyrean
Awesome! The atmospherics, the musicianship, the interplay between death growls and choral harmonies... If you're a Therion fan you simply MUST give this a listen. Even if you're not I'd still recommend having a listen cuz this is heavier and a little less pretentious and (in my opinion) Adora Vivos kicks Therion's ass all over the studio with this release! Theatrical metal has a new leader...
  36. Hideous Appetites
    by Adrenechrome
    featured track 00:00/00:00
    Titans Fall Titans Fall
Adrenochrome are a band with, according to their page, "a mission to bring back good ol' fashioned in-your-face rock n' roll." Well, I have to say: mission accomplished! Hard-edged, gutsy thrash metal (a là Megadeth, Death Angel, Onslaught) with a touch of groove to keep the vibe rollin' along! Check it out, get down, rock out!!

    Insidious Memories Insidious Memories
I may not be the most diehard black metal aficionado, but when it's done well it can seriously get into your head and mess with your mind - Dimmu Borgir, Cradle Of Filth and Necrophobic being obvious, but true examples! Advent Sorrow succeed in creating some of the most brain-shredding black metal I've heard!! And that's not just my bias towards West Australian talent talking... Seriously, just try this and it will ignite your nervous system!

Time Divine (Live in Tilburg 2011) Time Divine (Live in Tilburg 2011)
Aeon Zen are a band making a name for themselves in the British progressive metal scene and deservedly so. I personally still think that Threshold are the leaders in this field, but this band (as evidenced here) are a bloody talented bunch in their own right! This live recording captures them on tour supporting the almighty metal messiah, Devin Townsend!
