Lost in Satan's Charms Lost in Satan's Charms
Like Oi Magoi and Pnuema before it, Mayhem in Blue has an emotional momentum riding black metal, prog and psych grooves throughout. I am still puzzled how such a diverse collection of songs can seem so similar. Or how one minute I can be charmed by a circus like music box intro and then easily be swept up into a full-on wall of proginess and smoothly transition straight to black metal frenzy. Pure beauty.

  17. Diaspora
    by Cormorant
Diaspora has a sense of progress, of music moving forward with angular awareness. Like earlier Cormorant, Diaspora changes on a dime from jagged metal to soft, feathery ambiance and back. A few listens in and I can already tell this will be a 2017 favorite!
  18. Lord of Hounds
    by Ephemeral Sun
Driving, dark prog dripping with thick keys, evil atmosphere, and eerie themes. I love the mix of traditional symphonic prog motifs, with touches of Ars Nova/Gerard like wall of synths, interspersed with fusion-y guitar. Reference points abound as the songs move from heavy handed, ominous movements to light as a feather "post" prog.
  19. Urraca
    by Sunless
Colin Marston's influence is apparent on this release. A frenetic journey through many of death metal's more adventurous tropes.
  20. Earth Diver
    by Cormorant
    Waking Sleep Waking Sleep
Eris and the beginning of Daughter of Void are eerily reminiscent of early Opeth, but then the Black Metal-ness of the guitar and vox jar the listener back to Cormorant reality. What a joy. Earth Diver is serene and edgy at the same time with fleeting moments of tranquil beauty wedged between masterful Black Metal.
