  1. The Black Maria
    by ATTRITION
    Attrition - Black Maria

It was exciting news to find out that Attrition have brought out a full brand-new album, rather than just another compilation! Here, Martin Bowes is joined once again by original member Julia Niblock, Hungary’s Esme from Black Nail Cabaret, Yvette from Vaseline and Joanna Wolf

They're veterans, hailing from Coventry, in a post-punk world where The Special’s Ghost Town had been banned. However, their style soon evolved out of post punk into ambience, industrialism, opera
  2. Doom And Bloom
    by Desmond Doom
This mini Album from the melancholy surfer from Melbourne, seems to be in character.

Business as Usual is fast paced with strong base and jingly jangly guitars, vocals in world weary tone. It is followed by Ghost, then Cold and Lover's Song, the themes being heartache and alienation. Then follows Make me Feel Something: yes, this is scarcely original on its sentiments, Joy Division and early Cure got there first, of course they did, but you might suspect that there is a lot of tongue-in-cheek
  3. Chrysanthemum
    by Black Nail Cabaret
    Black Nail Cabaret Chrysanthemum

I picked up an earlier album from this band called God's Verging on Sanity. That one had a collection of bouncy dance tracks and slower songs, all set along the contralto of the vocalist. It's a newer thing, noir, very evocative of slightly seedy night life, bars and their jaded clientele, lonely drinkers wiling their time.

They are Hungarian, and sing in English. This album does continue where Gods left off in some ways, track 2 is another one set for the danc

  5. Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX - Secret Cuts
    by Curses
Next Wave Acid Pink Desux from Curses, haling from Germany, starts with an early Attrition-sounding hard-edged percussive track, the next one along continuing with a similar edgy move. Catchy though, with whispered vocals. It also fades out with samples, then returns. Next, there is a change in mood and tempo, more muted, less aggressive. Track 5, Alphas, builds and layers well, to be tranced and danced to. Next along along is also made for the dance floor, impossible to sit and be still for, co
  6. Metah
    by Dvar
    Dvar, Metah

Dvar, active since 1995, is an anonymous band from Russia. They say their music is channelled from a being called Dvar that sings in obscure tongues. Whatever the case they seem by turns to be experimentally electronic, dark wave and classical, though they are New Age enough at times to prefer being seen as lightwave, or mediaeval.

The mediaeval vibe is what predominates with this album (it's not quite their most recent). with a meditative, melancholy vibe. The opening track begin
  7. Csak csend
    by Crow Black Dream
I decided to check this 8-track album too. They are Hungarian too, and they sing in Hungarian too. They are a father/son duo:Robert and Milán Kovács.

It opens with Csak Csend, building up atmosphere with melodic guitar notes and melancholy melancholy vocals. Track Two, Miért Sirs, is fairly deliberately paced, whilst Fázom, Félek adds to the overall angst-ridden vibe, though Ma Nem which follows it, is more up tempo. Ki vagyok én has a superb intro! - and the angst is maintained as the singer
