I'm a huge Big Band fan, from early Duke & Fletcher thru Thad Jones-Mel Lewis, Gil Evans, Sun Ra, Muhal Richard Abrams, Globe Unity &, Darcy James Argue. But there has never been a band like CBBB-terrific arrangements, immense swing, an international cast of star soloists (the sax section alone saw J. Griffin, Z.Sims, T.Coe, D.Humble, Lockjaw Davis, S Shihab & R.Scott pass thru) - but mainly, this band kicked ass like no other. These guys brought it every time, played with fire and never let up

What could be better than getting a stunning remaster of of a classic Sun Ra album? Getting it as a gift from an incredibly gracious and kind fellow music lover here on BC. Many, many thanks to Tjarko Busink for this, and also for allowing me to know that reviewing things on BC actually does help others discover and enjoy music that I love.

Truly great to have this session - expanded and remastered - available again. I was already a fan of Ware when this was released from his work with Cecil Taylor and Andrew Cyrille's Maono (what a band, get a copy of "Metamusicians' Stomp" if you can for a real treat). All of the things that make Ware one of the true master musicians of our time are already on full display here, and Cooper-Moore & especially Marc Edwards also excel. Not just a must for Ware fans, but for any fan of great music

I enjoy this side of Ra very much, with his Swing & R&B roots showing. Early days here (1956), but a seriously fine way to experience his composing and arranging skills in more tradition forms. The band is tight and smooth, the soloists play very well and though it all sounds very much of the time it is very good - and , every once in a while you hear behind the standard forms a bit of what is to come

Another excellent release. I have been amazed how often I have been reminded of George Russell's work (along with Monk, Ellington & many others) during this period while listening to the flood of Ra's music now landing on BC. This one shows the same superb playing & arranging, a touch of exotica and compositional components ahead of the mainstream, that Russell's Riverside recordings with Dolphy and others do. All the while sounding distinctively like Ra of course

  34. Sing Me Some Cry
by Eric Revis, Ken Vandermark, Kris Davis, Chad Taylor
Revis' 2012 clean feed release featuring Vandermark ("Parallax") was one of that year's best albums, and this one is even better. Jason Moran and Nasheet Waits were on the 2012 release, both excellent players & long time collaborators with Revis, but the ever amazing Kris Davis and Chad Taylor give this one more edge, take even more chances - great, great music

Steven Joerg of Aum Fidelity is truly one of Improvised Music's legends, and it is very exciting to see his label's extraordinary catalog begin to appear on BC. This one is another tour-de-force for Ware, and we get treated to a very large dose of his stritch playing as well as his otherworldly tenor. Long solo stretches, great interplay, the incomparable William Parker and Warren Smith rounding out the trio ...bliss

William Parker's Quartet is for me the finest unit of its era. The consistently high quality of the playing, variety of compositions, and commitment found on every release is unmatched. AUM's deep catalog of Parker's recordings (and those of David S. Ware and others) will hopefully find their way to BC soon, as they would rank with the very best found on the site by any improvising artist

Exhilarating, mesmerizing, this one drew me in so deeply I couldn't believe when it ended that so much time had passed so quickly. It is beyond extraordinary how in-synch Ware and Shipp are on this date. Even expecting that I would love this album because two of my favorite musicians were involved, I am still blown away by what I hear

For most Ra fans this would easily rank as one of Ra's Top 5 albums, and the incredible side long keyboard excursion that closes out the album is sui generis. It also sounds in this new remaster significantly better than any previous release. Enterplanetary Koncepts will bankrupt me if they don't slow down their amazing release of Ra remasters on BC - these rm's have been (with the exception of Lanquidity) marginally to most often exceptionally better than any others I have heard.
