  1. A Hanky Full Of Chissum
    by Mike Schnee
Sir Yabba Dabba Dabba Con Carne McWhistler Sir Yabba Dabba Dabba Con Carne McWhistler
It's such a rare feat to embody multiple distinct musical personalities so organically as Mike does. Wormstew has tons of their own songs and also covers Chissum and Pussy Cow songs. And then Chissum has tons of songs too, of which a small fraction are represented on this delightfully weird record. All these versions of all these songs self-evidently need to exist and be heard although they're all written by the same guy. I feel very fortunate to know him and his music.

  8. Catapulting Stars
    by EZ Tiger
    Backseat Backseat
Lucky for us, EZ Tiger have continued to flout the conventional wisdom that no one listens to full albums anymore, delivering their finest, most cohesive work yet. Catapulting Stars sounds and feels like a classic indie rock album without ever veering into self-consciously retro territory. It's meticulously mixed & sequenced. Very sharp, economical songwriting keeps things thrumming along. Scintillating harmonies & lead lines enter at all the right moments to maximize each song's emotional pull.
  9. Juggernaut

The Damage that I Do The Damage that I Do
As consistent, catchy and fun as anything he's done (and he's done a few things over the years, in case you didn't know). Having said that: not unexpectedly, lyrically, some of the shit is quite dark. My personal favorite is about working self-destruction like a job. Clock in and go to work, day in and day out. It's ultimately the one activity we can all participate in and the one goal that each of us can attain. Counterintuitively, this song fills my soul with unfettered joy. Beautiful work.
  10. Made of Metal
    by Tiny Shiny Robots
I love how quickly it gets chaotic and they're singing different stuff on top of each other. Great to hear another voice singing with Mike TV. Not even jealous because it's so good and so different than anything else I've heard from him before but equally infectious. Production is top notch too. Love the dueling solos. There's a lot of gotdamn music in here.
  11. All My Almost Best
    by Mike Schnee
You'll Always Be Wrong You'll Always Be Wrong
I was listening in mono a lot because only one speaker works in my car. Was partial to the first couple rockers & of course "Kellyanne" with its wild prog hoedown bridge. The arrangements are top-knotch. Teresa's bass playing needs singling out - the parts and feel are exceptional. BUT now that I am listening on headphones in STEREO, the downtempo closer is owning my soul (literally). If you're a fan of Jon Brion's productions, this is 1:57 of time I guarantee you'll be glad to have invested.
  12. Whatever Happened to Todd? EP
    by Stephan Cox
    Karen's Lament Karen's Lament
I didn't believe myself to be a person who had the capacity to empathize with & care so deeply about Karen (or Todd, for that matter) until I heard Stephan's music, and then suddenly everything clicked. This is really funny and also really well-crafted and poignant (okay, maybe not track 3 but it's still a gem) music. Infectious tunes and grooves. Free life lessons. Free songwriting lesson. You can't go wrong with this EP.
  13. ALT-TAB (Demo Pack)
    by Littleton
Thoughts for Food (Demo) Thoughts for Food (Demo)
Lo-fi, no frills, punchy & hooky as hell. The sung bits recall Frank Black; the screams, peak Cobain. I'm glad somebody out there with the requisite talent & taste is out there just doing it and not overthinking. Proof of concept. Rock music still can rock. I'm ready to join the movement.
  14. Ash
    by Eric Lea
    Easy Doesn't Easy Doesn't
The most aurally accessible bits are the most emotionally taxing. Title track at once sums up & mucks up the whole affair with its campy delivery & lyrics (“Scatter my ash in the mountains so I can be part of it all”). Songs wrestle with one another, making competing claims on the artist's intent. Nothing about this is easy. Demands time & attention. Heaps rewards on the listener when it is good & ready. When? Who knows? But the closer says it best: “Centenarian or embryo, it’s on its way now."
