"It's funny where the mind goes..." On All Fours is the archetype of an album which rewards your patience. The initially scuzzy, abrasive impression of Goat Girl as intellectually impressive but icy and uncompromising post-punks soon gives way to the rich reward of a vividly multi-layered record with a much warmer, softer core of glorious, Stereolab-infused melodies.
"Just for an hour, f**k everything..." Madeline Link must have been born in the late 90s, yet she's steeped in the indie rock of the years just before she was born. Her aesthetic is so coloured by The Good Stuff that this album could have been presented to me as a lost gem from that era and I'd have taken it as gospel. Fans of Pavement and The Shins in particular will take Packs to their hearts, but there are also lovely little echoes of Bilinda Butcher at times. Beautiful, melodic slacker tones
I love everything that the Holiday GOATs put out. They always subtly evolve, but the core of what appeals to me about their sound is never lost. There's a big dose of The Feelies in 'Again and Again', which is catnip as far as I'm concerned. Kat is a brilliant singer/songwriter and just gets better all the time. I don't think this is their best album - if you're new to them, get hold of the doozy debut LP and work your way forwards - but it's still got plenty to recommend it.
My favourite thing about this record is the irony that it's an album about being fed up of going to parties to hang out with boring people and take too much of various things, which led to... them heading out on a seemingly endless world tour. How they approach their second LP (in old money) will be absolutely fascinating.
