As a songwriter, I feel like I'm always trying to connect with the part of my young brain that streamed page after page of un-self-conscious drivel onto napkins, three ring binders, and yes even microcassettes in an old answering machine my parents gifted to me, quite bizarrely, as a toy. It's that absolutely pure tug-of-war between the expulsion of words and the skipped stones of mostly instinctual rhythm and rhyme. Kid Katie's prepubescent streams of consciousness have this quality in spades.
