"In a letter written in the 1760s,
Leonhard Euler said that sunlight is ‘with respect to the ether, what sound is with respect to air’, and described the Sun as ‘a bell ringing out light’"
Old timers like me who spent the 90s having Big Feels to stuff like Buffalo Tom or whatever are gonna love/hate this. Love it because it's great, hate it because the waterworks will be flowing on almost every track, especially the one-two gut punch of Tightropes/In the Red.
Mysterious mix of wyrd folk pastoralia, spooked NZ pop, and fuzzy indie rock, all somehow hanging together to form a uniquely lovely whole. Great stuff, maybe my favorite record of the year.
90s shoegaze bands, even the best ones, tended to be terminally uncool. Bowery Electric was a major exception. I mean, they even had an amazing shirt that put "Bowery Electric" on the Adidas logo. This record and Beat are beyond essential listening, shimmering with uniquely menacing, entrancing beauty.
