    Kilmister Kilmister
Tough as a size 12 Doc Marten to the teeth, this punk group's debut album proudly wears its influences -- from GBH to Slayer -- like badges on a leather jacket. Better produced than most records released on some of the more "established" indie labels. Pointed lyrics from Mörat, ranging from sneering derision at an oppressive society to lacerating self-evaluation ... plus a tribute to dearly departed friend Lemmy Kilmister. Disorderly and damned fine stuff.

    Breathe... Breathe...
On this raw and scrappy album, Trouble sound like the greatest 1968 garage band you've never heard. They set aside their doom metal sound for this one, sped things up, and kept the songs short and sharp. Not sure why Rick Rubin had Eric Wagner sing through a telephone on some tunes (or whatever it was that distorts his vocals to make them sound scratchy), but you can't argue with the results. I love how closing track "Breathe" segues into Donovan's "Atlantis" ... trippy!

    R.I.P. R.I.P.
Chicago's answer to Black Sabbath cast dark storm clouds with this classic album of towering riffs, and wailing vocals from Eric Wagner. Magnificent production from Rick Rubin.
