Lost (In the Embrace of the Abyss) Lost (In the Embrace of the Abyss)
This album may be unfairly judged, due to the band’s name. This was meant as a loving tribute, though, and they may have set expectations too high (for their own good).

While not an exceptional album, *it is* very fun, and highly enjoyable. If you’re like me and can’t get enough Dissection worship, give this a chance. Things take off after the 1st song.
  4. L'Appel
    by Pâlefroid
    Bâtard Galeux Bâtard Galeux
After the debut, which had so much promise, I wanted to see where Pâlefroid would go next. The biggest improvement is in the vocal production; gone is the audio clipping, which (to me) detracted from the performance.

Wonderfully melodic, epic in scope, and perfectly raw, this album displays a more realized vision for Pâlefroid. “Bâtard Galeux” should be on any black metal lover’s “top songs of 2024” list.
  5. Abraxas
    by Alkhemia
    Reminiscence Quintessence Reminiscence Quintessence
What an incredible debut. Easily one of the best debuts I’ve heard in a while. Even though they mention Mgla, this is far away from any Mgla or anyone cloning.

Amazing atmosphere, engaging melodies and well-structured black metal songs are what you’ll find here.
  6. Sermons Of The Black Flames
    by HALPHAS
Wolves Of The Void Wolves Of The Void
Halphas has become a new-to-me favorite. You’ll find expertly-crafted riffs and atmosphere, with melody and dissonance playing off of each other. They’ve perfectly bridged the old and the new, as it’s not pure 2nd-wave worship, or Mgla aping either.
  7. The Infernal Path Into Oblivion
    by Halphas
    FOREVER SPELLBOUND FOREVER SPELLBOUND
Forever Spellbound is incredibly catchy. The entire album is very good. Dark and menacing, with tons of melody and energy. Great drum work, too.
  8. The Age Of Rust
    by Son Of Iron
    The Fall The Fall
Hell yeah! Have no clue who this band (or person) is, but this is seriously good Dissection-inspired melodic black metal; thrashy, with a touch of Bathory for good measure. Not another toothless wannabe, Son of Iron has a lot of muscle on the razor-wired skeleton.

  9. The Rhythmus Of Death Eternal
    by KRVNA
  10. A Debt Paid in Blood

A Debt Paid in Blood A Debt Paid in Blood
I love where he’s going with his music - second-wave melodic black metal, with a modern touch - and look forward to the full length.

    by Dödsrit
Utmed Gyllbergens Stig Utmed Gyllbergens Stig
Dödsrit is one of my favorite bands, and they absolutely deliver here. More melodic and less crusty than prior outings, they still retain the essence of what makes them special: the ability to make mournful, but energetic and uplifting music. Or, as another user put it: I wanna swing the air sword when I listen to Dödsrit.

    by Nornír
    Pest Pest
I really love Nornír’s approach to traditional black metal. They add very enjoyable personal touches, especially with the leads and drums; they aren’t merely retreading the past. Just about everything is well executed: vocals, guitar tone, rhythm section, production, songs, and variety, to keep it interesting.

    by Kärv / Duister Maanlicht
Kärv - Pillars of Salt Kärv - Pillars of Salt
The man behind Kärv may not market his music as (un)black metal, but the Kärv portion of the split gives Satanic black metal bands a run for their money. Has got a little bit of a Dödsrit vibe at times, which is never a bad thing.
