  5. Observations on Land and Sea
    by Pefkin
The Sea is a Mirror The Sea is a Mirror
Pefkin inhabits a realm of mystery and abstraction with just the right level of foreboding. The Sea Is A Mirror is undoubtedly my favourite, with its dense instrumentation and vocals that intertwine with each other in the mist. It really is a journey into the ether. Crested Wavelets on Inland Water is notable for its arresting strings and touching vocals. This is the first time I have written about the Beaufort Scale since school Geography lessons. It is much more exciting in this context!
  6. Portrait Of An Atmosphere
    by Primitive Motion
    Portrait I Portrait I
Each piece is captivating from start to finish, like a conversation where you pay attention to every word. Instruments are stripped back, almost bare. Selig and Craig use everything at hand, from whistling to guitar, voice and field recordings. There are lots of different sounds, but they all seem to know their place.

Love the scrunched groove of Selective Memory!

  9. Autumn Glory
by Hypnotic Sleep / The Fulmars
Hypnotic Sleep - Schnäi in en Braukwischen Hypnotic Sleep - Schnäi in en Braukwischen
Equally enamored by the righteous melody of Schnäi in en Braukwischen and the post-everything stomp of No Hugs!
  10. Flipped It
    by Sarah Mary Chadwick
All Those Things We'll Never Do All Those Things We'll Never Do
Jaw dropping end of relationship poetry. Chadwick really gets to the heart of what happens when people break up. All Those Things We'll Never Do charts the end of intimacy and shared experiences. This counts for both exciting and mundane experiences. This song should come with a health warning. Do not listen to it in a fragile emotional state!

  13. Luster
    by Luster
    Espace, éther Espace, éther
Drone Folk! Excuse me? To my ears, this is a fairly accurate description of the music made by this Morc Records signed six piece. Luster’s sound is one part fuzzy drone and another other part traditional folk, complete with cello, flute and harmonium. In terms of reference points, Luster aren’t quite ‘weird folk’ and compared to their more psychedelic contemporaries, these compositions have more of a downer vibe.
  14. Straw Belle
    by Grottoes
Today, Donaldson is no longer Q Burns. Instead, he has been reborn as Grottoes. Straw Belle is a slow motion key driven winner. Walking pace percussion provides a bed for those keys and star gazing synths. Donaldson often shares sunrises over water on Twitter and this calming Downtempo groover seems influenced by the breaking of dawn. Welcome Grottoes!
  15. Flower Studies
    by Blue Chemise
Chrysanthemum no 1 Chrysanthemum no 1
The music appears fragile on the surface, but there is an unexpected strength to each of the Flower Studies. Each study has its own distinct character and the compositions presumably take their names from Braun’s set of images. Notable studies include the sombre melancholia of Gout Wort and the macabre uplift of Chrysanthemum no 1. Flower Studies gets under your skin, in the best possible way.
  16. Hurry Up Tomorrow
    by Nu'Rons
Hurry Up Tomorrow Part 1 Hurry Up Tomorrow Part 1
Fantastic heartbroken dreamy soul from 1980.
  17. Hypnogogic Relapse And Other Penumbral Phenomena
    by Crazy Doberman
    Distant Bells Distant Bells
The longer we’ve had to live in today's world, the more utterly convinced I’ve become that Crazy Doberman are the perfect crew to accompany us in these strange times. After all, much of their music sounds like it was made for a dystopian future. The eerie experimental layer of their sound makes them perfect to guide us through a world of invisible enemies and extreme paranoia. When we move to full on psychedelic jamming, the Doberman crew are the best outfit to help us forget our troubles.

  20. Anomi
    by Sonja Tofik
The Earth Spirit The Earth Spirit
Ambient goth? Dungeon synth? Graveyard chic? Anomi begins with cawing crows! Genre-based semantics aside, Anomi is a magical album that is certainly at the darker end of the experimental spectrum.
