  17. Helplessness Blues
    by Fleet Foxes
    Helplessness Blues Helplessness Blues
I can't help but be in awe of the sound Fleet Foxes manage to generate on "Helplessness Blues"; The words grandiose and romantic come to mind in an attempt to describe its sound. However the main appeal, at least for me, is the lyrics. Pecknold manages to tackle so many troubling emotions and wrap them all up with a satisfying conclusion by the end.

  19. Either/Or
    by Elliott Smith
    Speed Trials Speed Trials
This album more-or-less misses out on some of the more interesting stripped-back cuts from Elliott's self-titled, but "Either/Or" is probably his most cohesive work. For the better part of its 12 tracks there are sad and sarcastic lyrics, super solid songwriting, and an immense feeling of melancholy. Definitely feels like you're getting your indie singer/songwriter fill.
  20. Illinois
    by Sufjan Stevens
Decatur, or, Round of Applause for Your Stepmother! Decatur, or, Round of Applause for Your Stepmother!
A super creative album that throws so many instruments and ideas at you in its 1hr 14min length. Some songs feel like magnificent epics while others serve as Blues-Folk ballads. The best part is that Sufjan never seems to lose steam, as there's not a moment of filler. The entire thing can only be described as a melodic, beautifully crafted depiction of one of America's most interesting states.
