Superb debut album, from the lush soundscapes of “To Make a Prairie,” “Whatever Hurts, and “West Texas Lullaby” to the sweetly and sadly melodic cover of John Prine’s “Late John Garfield Blues.” The rhythmic guitar strumming is bright throughout and in the more upbeat songs have the lively bounce of later Paul Simon. The album is also lyrically smart, with surprising rhymes and provocative extensions of metaphor and idea. I look forward eagerly to more.
