  4. Celadon Plaza: Year Two
    by Various Artists
GLOBAL CHILL - by the light of the moon GLOBAL CHILL - by the light of the moon
Another year, another set of amazing albums. Celadon has really taken on the goal of expanding their scope over 2023, with a lot more records, more ambitious offerings to the community such as the replacement of Male Alchemy tapes, and a focus on quality in general.

A compilation of great tracks is here to celebrate that, with a nice selection for anyone just getting into their roster.

I’m celebrating a seventh anniversary myself! I hope in my heart of hearts that this label does as well.
  5. 19999
    by Windows96
New Era Display New Era Display
A collection of some of Win96’s best unreleased experimentations in sound, encompassing styles and ideas that he’s moved over, across, and past, through the last decade or so.

While people are more familiar with the traditionally “synthwave” sound present in his newest works, there’s a lot of variety here that might encourage listeners to look back at his catalogue.

Dancier tracks, soundfont-style synthwave, his newer chilled out synth stylings, there’s really everything here. A prime sampler.
  6. EMPIRE BUILDING
    by SAINT PEPSI
    Pineapple Juniors Pineapple Juniors
The craziest thing about this album is that you could write a whole review just about Pineapple Juniors as a track alone. It’s the exact paradigm shift where you can see SP’s sound changing from late night lo-fi to future funk before it was even a widespread thing.

On either side to its front and back, it’s also surrounded by much more relaxed tracks, with a similarly upbeat pair alongside “Shaolin” much later on.

If you like both SP’s earlier and later work, this is a perfect fusion of both.
  7. Memory Book
    by Penthouse Suite
    IMG_0064.jpg IMG_0064.jpg
A collection of sample vignettes that fade and slide into another, like a slideshow of sounds and ideas to peer over momentarily, before flipping the page to a new one.

There’s some great variety in the chops and loops, jazz, funk, easy listening, and most surprisingly, a few appearances of what I can only assume to be cassette-era Burmese pop.

Because of its nature, you’ll end up coming out with a few tracks as favorites. If you love classic vapor, check out Penthouse Suite’s spin on it.
  8. Matter Of Time
    by RIK
Matter Of Time Matter Of Time
It almost kind of feels gutturally unfair to look at the release date on this album and only seeing it pick back up in attention this late.

There’s notes of synth pop, new wave, and all of the other trappings of the era RIK was composing this in, all given a unique spin through by being presented by themselves as instrumentals.

The title track is probably my favorite out of the bunch, but the crossover of riffs and motifs between tracks makes this feel like such a complete passion project.
  9. An Obsession With Kit - EP
    by Graham Kartna
We're Only Human We're Only Human
There’s an obsession with repetition as well as with “kit” in this EP. Experimentations with short, choppy loops and segments that function almost like instruments in themselves.

It evokes the same sort of techniques that you would be using midi-boards for reconstructions, but with an added layer of precision and more built off of it, using the most complex part of its compositions not as the focus, but in the background, humble.

There really is nothing else quite like Kartna’s music.
  10. REFRACTIVE DREAMERS
    by 5thwrld
    06vision-128kb 06vision-128kb
Really well-composed dnb, with a layer of compression and effects that crystallizes the sound beyond comprehension.

There’s been a trend of people artificially recreating the sound and texture of low-quality mp3 players through their work and I feel this hits the perfect spot between authentic and listenable.

Even at its most intense, there’s still a “soft” feel that muffles over the most aggressive tones of the hardcore breaks and adds an iciness to the smooth synths.
  11. Lounge Atmospheres
    by Trademarks & Copyrights
    美的ラウンジ 美的ラウンジ
People seem to forget a lot that one of the many roots of vaporwave in its essence was the respect of music that was heavily commercialized, turning something that was intended by large part to round out the atmosphere of a store into its own singular experience.

Trademarks & Copyrights was one of quite a few people in the earlier days who noticed this, and Lounge Atmospheres condenses the ethos nicely. If you consider trends in vapor now, it was predictive in ways no one could have known then.
  12. 太陽。慰安。楽園。/ The future is here
    by 猫 シ Corp.
    太陽。慰安。楽園。 - ヨッシー minigolf 太陽。慰安。楽園。 - ヨッシー minigolf
Without question, both of these EPs are probably the most underrated pieces of Corp’s discography, having been overlooked in favor of his projects with grander scope.

There’s still a lot to enjoy in these and I hope that people look back to this bundle someday and take notice of how good a lot of his ideas were, even early on.

There’s a lot of varied sample choices on the first side and a focus on hard-set classic vaporwave sounds on the second, with some really nice bonus tracks for both.
  13. ever chance
    by clust.r
    us pretenders us pretenders
Glitchy, yet aggressively rhythmic. Patches and scraps of sample fabric that make a cohesive quilt where thought, minutiae, and texture melt into each other.

Like a ship of theseus of sound that dares you to pick it apart and examine the individual pieces, then put it back together again in your head.

There isn’t a lot of music that sounds like this, so it’s that much more impressive that it’s so well refined in what it does. “Experimental” is a nebulous tag these days, but this deserves it.
  14. あなたは二度と戻れない (Deluxe Edition)
    by 𝐺𝑂𝑅𝐸
  15. CLICKFARM 2004 오리지널 사운드 트랙
    by BOTOXANAX
    시프트 후 시프트 후
An absolute oddity in low fidelity mangling, thematically tied together by the aesthetics of downloadable mp3s from the early 2000s.

It took a while for people to catch onto the fact that this level of bitcrush has a sort of nostalgia to it and seriously harness that power, but Botoxanax was ahead of the curve with this EP.

I think a lot about it as more advancements in genres which take similar mastering approaches and effects chaining continue to appear. Nothing, if not prescient.
  16. Top Ten most Epic fish of all time
    by Sintel
    7. Flatfish 7. Flatfish
Hidden behind a thin veneer of irony through its title and the concept that surrounds it, there’s some seriously good synth-y, minimal ambient going on here.

I didn’t know what to expect going in, but this pleasantly surprised me by the end. Simultaneously in that area of sound between aquatic and space-y, ominous in a way that isn’t exactly scary, yet it keeps you on edge.

It works really well as ambience in the traditional sense. Turn it on in the background and enhance any activity.
  17. إمبراطورية مستحضر الأرواح
    by Magnum Innominandum
    Sodosma Sodosma
I’ve been waiting for physicals of Magnum’s albums for a while now, so it’s great to see them finally out in the world. His ability to work with samples in long spans and effectively create jam sessions out of them is something that’s caught my eye.

The combination of traditionally relaxing sounds that come from this style of vapor and an undeniable groove work perfectly together, which makes this album an easy recommend for me.

If you miss out on this artist early, you’re missing out hard.
  18. Ideation Deluxe
    by Graham Kartna
Wilton, Clarkson, James Wilton, Clarkson, James
Short and sweet, full of the dreamy, semi-sickly synth stings that Kartna has been known for. He’s really managed to perfect this sort of sound over the course of a long time, and “Ideation Deluxe” was really where a lot of future concepts game to fruition.

It helps that the EP opens with what is probably one of his strongest tracks to date, manipulating several sounds that almost sound like they belong in a tracker program, blended with (semi) modern instruments for something truly unique.
  19. ULTRA
    by GODSPEED 音
    金融ソフトウェア 金融ソフトウェア
A culmination of everything GODSPEED has been working towards with his last handful of releases. Vowing to focus on the ultra minimal and hone his skills even further than before, “ULTRA” decides to forgo all that with an explosion of both colors and sound, a celebration of excess after months of patience.

To compliment the look, all the sounds here are supremely boisterous while retaining the chillness that the artist has become known for.

This really feels like the next big milestone.
  20. Eterna
    by heaven silhouettes
Theme For Entombment Theme For Entombment
There’s a sort of haunting type of aura hanging over this HS release, combining a lot of atmospheric electronica as a base with some hip hop sampling sprinkled over top and underneath.

His approach is only made that much more interesting by a mastery of repetition with the snippets that he takes ahold of, arranging portions in ways that interweave and thread into themselves and each other.

I’ve been pleased with all his releases getting shots with labels recently and this one is no exception.
