  1. Backwards Lullaby
    by Gal Musette
I actually have the hard copy I bought at the recent release party at Hotel Cafe. I have been a fan for 5 years. I needed a digital copy because a Microsoft update destroyed my CD/DVD drive functionality on my desktop. Anyway, G.M. just keeps getting better and better. Equally haunting and beautiful. A smidge of Blossom Dearie channeled through Edith Piaf but contemporary at the same time. Honeymoon is my favorite track.
  2. Sing Sing Sing (extended mix)
by Wolfgang Lohr, The Speakeasy Three
I was actually searching for the entire album by the Speakeasy Three. Sadly, not here. Guess I'll have to resort to Itunes. In any case, I do like Electro Swing and this will fit nicely in my collection.
  3. Ghost (featuring Coma Culture)
    by Gal Musette
Beautiful song. I particularly like the carousel like background that appears towards the end, but the entire song is impeccably produced and performed.

  4. Workstation
    by Marc Plainguet
You have to love an album that has lyrics like "he was belligerent and extremely rude." (Godzilla VS. The World) The 80's synth sends us back in time. Good satire, Maynard.
  5. Mr. Skull's Magical Eyeball Mystery Band
    by Marc Plainguet
  6. Alu's Not Dead
    by alu
Missed Amber Tamblyn's (an acquaintance) premiere of Stephanie Daley. Ended up seeing 8mm, Coto Normal (fronted by another friend) and Alu. Bought stuff. Also bought an Alu T-shirt leading to a years long inside joke. No longer a size Medium, yet can still squeeze into that T-shirt. Have all of Alu's albums. This might be my favorite song yet. Lighter (yet still comically dark) and playful. The musicianship and vocals are exquisite. Having little Nomi in it just makes it more fun and personal.
  7. Summertime
    by Gal Musette
Love all of Gal Musette's work. There really is no artist right now that sounds anything like her music. Though, there are echoes of other, classic artists, like Joni Mitchell and even Edith Piaf in her work. Summertime has the expected dreaminess and superb harmonies I have come to expect from Grace. (even her real name describes her and her music) I am so glad she is back making music.

  8. Shame
    by Rich Boucher
Rich is an amazing poet. I already love all his poetry. A few years back Rich joined a private group on FB. Once a year we are asked to cover songs for The Great Cover Song Challenge. I enjoy Rich's versions of songs which sound like sound collages that would do David Lynch proud. I think this might be my favorite so far.
  9. Summer Of Love
    by Paper City
Marisa Predisik and Paper City were a fairly constant staple of the Spoken Word scene here in So Cal in the 2000's. I still have some very rare EPs and albums of theirs from that time. This particular album is a re-buy.I love Paper City's energy, sunshiny vocals and 60's like pop, fun, arrangements. As a DJ (well, before Covid, anyway) I often included a Christmas song from Paper City during the Holidays. In any case, you could say, I am a big fan!
  10. Island Holiday
    by Paper City
Big fan of Paper City. But life intruded and I lost track. Had no idea this EP existed. Completes my collection.

  11. The Lost Go Sailing By
    by The Moon Police
The Moon Police was (is?) a terrific supergroup of local favorites. Fun and beautiful harmonies. Not sure if Douglas Miller is on this album, but he is the best violinist California has. The vocals, of course, are terrific.
  12. Honeymoon
    by Gal Musette
Any new Gal Musette is an expected treat and this doesn't disappoint. As the years have passed her voice remains as beautiful and dreamy, though the music has shifted towards modern pop, she still reminds me a little of Blossom Dearie, but also a little of Edith Piaf, and something else, something that makes her so absolutely unique in the traffic of Californian artists.
  13. Tiny Desk Concert Contest
    by Alyssandra Nighswonger
Any Alyssandra Nighswonger is cause for celebration, live or not.
  14. When my love knot slips...
    by Alyssandra Nighswonger
Alyssandra is just wonderful. Love and own everything I can get my hands on.
  15. Myocardial
    by Itoarazi
I think what I love most about Itoarazi is the vast variety of styles and experimentation. This really applies to all his work, but certainly applies here. What is even more amazing, is that it is not an incoherent jumble, but follows the thread of a musical heartbeat that continuously pumps through the album.
  16. The Curiosity Shop
    by Marc Plainguet
  17. Jolene
by Walter Sickert & The Army of Broken Toys
This is kind of an overall review of Walter Sickert & The Army Of Broken Toys, though this cover seriously rocks. What I love about this band (and I own , I believe, their entire huge catalogue-even the soundtracks) is that you feel at all times like you are watching The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari with Tom Waits sitting right next to you.
  18. Strange Tales
    by Marc Plainguet
This applies to all of Marc's albums. I love the experimentation, the humor and the surreal, spacey, grand, variety of the genres. It is absolutely mind boggling the scope of what Plainguet has accomplished. These collections by no shape or form sound like they were once cassettes. The sound is crisp, clear and every bit as professional as any big corporate output. Kudos and bravo!
