I did not hear them play live, but these gentlemen really do perform with an intensity that makes the world cease to exist. Whatever's going on with Ukrainian post black metal bands: they play with a certain, unbridled ferocity one hardly hears anywhere else. This heavily reminds me of Futility Report-era White Ward - which is meant in the absolute best way! Less sax, of course, but this chastising savagery shining through is just THAT good. And Dima Dudko's feature is great. A gem!

  10. Uranium
    by Dauþuz
    Wismut-»Justiz« Wismut-»Justiz«
Most lyrics in black metal suck and we all know it. This is not the case with Dauþuz - the theme of traditional mining, the stories and tragedies arising from it is a refreshing approach and adds quite some depth (sorry) to the music. Their tales, embedded in radiant, cascading riffs and thunderous drums, are presented with an astonishing vocal performance: be it croaking, howling, vitriolic spitting or clean singing, one feels the passion at every second. It stirs the soul. Glück auf!
  11. Vom schwarzen Schmied - Bergkgesænge
    by Dauþuz
Bergschmied VIII: Sargdeckel - Bergkgesænge Bergschmied VIII: Sargdeckel - Bergkgesænge
Dauþuz again! Infusing their ironclad black metal with clean singing and clattering straight into the listener's veins with it! Vom schwarzen Schmied is an intense album, no matter if adorned with clean or harsh vocals, but this evokes the feeling of listening to the band's music in the depths of an iron mine more than anything else they've released, the mighty vocals echoing with the damp and iron ore-streaked walls. A capital re-interpretation of this iron juggernaut of an album!
  12. All Is Dust
    by Neaera
What a glorious day it is. Neaera absolutely belongs to the spearhead of the German metal scene, and Pacifier is but a welcome taste of what's to come with their newest release. As always, Benny Hilleke's vocal performance is flesh-rending and brutal, the riffs hit with the force of a runaway train, and the drums will flog you to a bloody pulp behind the railway building. Sounds great so far and will surely be terrific. Further thoughts to follow in June!
  13. Deep Space Voyagers
    by Rojinski
  14. World Ablaze
    by GAEREA
No matter what, Gaerea always deliver the good. World Ablaze is their shortest song by a mile but is still filled to the brim with fine-tuned riffs, atmosphere, Diogo's delightful drumming and borderline insane vocals. As expected, Guilherme fits that spot very well - an accomplishment that can hardly be overstated, as Ruben's emotive but savage vocal performance always has been a focal point of their music.
Rejoice, as World Ablaze is a fucking 10/10 banger. Ready for whatever comes next!
  15. Der böse Geist
    by NIMBIFER
    Schlangenmaul Schlangenmaul
Bought and listened to it tonight already, but after the listening party over on BMP just had to purchase the tape. Their demos and part of the 4-way split were impressive already, but this is something else. Nimbifer finally unleash their first full-length upon the world, standing head and shoulders above the competition. Good things take time, and Der Böse Geist is a prime example of that. Superb work, gentlemen!
  16. Der böse Geist
    by NIMBIFER
    Schlangenmaul Schlangenmaul
Nimbifer strike unexpected and with head-cleaving force, releasing a relentless banger of an album. Der Böse Geist moves forward at breakneck speed, only ever taking its foot off the gas to smite the listener with harsh and disorienting (but atmospheric) noise. It's an unrestrained and brutal beauty, the vocals buried beneath a wall of blastbeats and always furious, at times even emotive riffing. Fantastic sound, raw enough to bleed at a touch and most likely THE raw black metal release of 2024.
  17. CURE
    by ERRA
Crawl Backwards Out of Heaven Crawl Backwards Out of Heaven
Let me start by saying that this is arguably Erra's most auspicious album since Drift. From the first second on, there is the typical, traditional, tremendous Erra groove paired with the versatile vocal variance of both JT and Jesse - a definite dream duo! I always preferred their more toothy and tenacious tracks, and there's positively plenty of them here. Songs like Slow Sour Bleed or Crawl Backwards Out of Heaven are rich in depth and detail, and among the best this band has ever released.
  18. Ekbom
    by Benighted
Le Vice des Entrailles Le Vice des Entrailles
I love good intros, and Prodrome sets the mood well for the 35 minutes of completely unhinged slaughter that follow. Julien Truchan is an an exceptional vocalist - this man's noises are severely mind-boggling - backed up by a bunch of the seemingly most insane deathgrinders of the current timeline, e.g. Kévin Paradis: an absolute monster, pounding not only the drums but also my hypothalamus because this shit sends my blood pressure straight to the moon. Violent, bizarrely addictive, great.
  19. Phrenesis
    by KRATER
I usually don't check my phone during work, but I'm glad that I randomly did this one time! KRATER arguably play the most vicious but still atmospherically compelling black metal in all ov Germany. Their last outing managed to sound seriously menacing whilst also being well-produced - a hard task to accomplish in this genre. I will not listen to any singles before the album releases, but the description is promising. Specific thoughts will follow on May 31st. Until then: listen to Venenare!
  20. Eclipse | Advent
    by Ethereal Wound
    Corpse Corpse
Thoroughly punched in the balls by how excruciatingly good and intense this is. I have not seen Berserk before, but this is bound to change solely because of Ethereal Wound. Eclipse | Advent will pull you in with the force of an undertow and not let go of you until your body's being crushed by the weight of its aphotic currents, or rather its death and black metal magnificence. Just the right amount of dissonance to top it all off and most obviously a project driven by pure passion. Buy or die!
