"...and so we destroyed everything" was soaring and always building--all that defines the music of SMW. "Love of Cartography" was that and more: more crunchiness, more riffs, more SMW. "Made of Breath Only" is, somehow, better. It melts their previous releases to the ground and then builds upon the rubble.

Finally a new release that has lived up to the anticipation! A bit moodier than "Life in Cycles," less tapping and fewer notes but more melodic overall. These guys have done a great job making another dancy record, but this one works through more colors than LIC did. And I think that's a good thing. Though I do wish a few tracks were longer/did more ("Goner" and "Katy").

Favorite was really hard to pick. "Slowboy" is a close second. And the intro track, for some reason, makes me tear up.

These guys just keep getting better. I wasn't a huge fan of the last album. But they really stepped up their game on this one. Every track is great. All the guitar leads work right into one another and with the other parts of each track. And yet, with the super fun guitar work, the lyrics are a bit... down? And yet it works. It really works.

    OMS Burn OMS Burn
These guys are awesome. They consistently put out great tunes and have gotten only better with each release. I've been awaiting this album for months (or since I first listened to Chase the Ghost...). I appreciate the slight change to the guitar/keys dichotomy and the reasons for doing so. It makes this album a bit sleepier and dreamier at parts. But I do miss the dual guitar work of earlier releases. That's why "OMS Burn" is my top track: the dual guitar work returns and is as lovely as ever.

Prelude to War Prelude to War
Quicker, shorter, less deliberate perhaps than their sophomore release. Lots of piano, which also is absent from East the Water (and that's totally fine). The haunting voices leading the "Prelude to War" into "War" are chilling. (I bet this would be awesome to experience live.) A solid album from start to finish. And they were just getting started.

I like this album more each time I listen to it, though admittedly I haven't listened to it as consistently as I could. "Absolute Zero" still is the standout to me, but the other tracks each seem more powerful than they did before: "Everything Everywhere" and "Obedience" (especially the second half) are particularly strong tracks.

Ben does it again. This warm, fuzzy album gives me warm fuzzies. This is kind of like "Little Histories, Part II." Some tracks also sound like completed ideas from his early MySpace stuff (compare "Intro to Woum" and "The Plan of an Aesthete," for example).

Their self-titled debut was solid. But this... this was worth every second of the wait. East the Water links together intense sonic thunderclaps and weaves a beautiful aural tapestry without becoming cacophonous or redundant. Simply put, this album fucking destroys. Lots of emotion, lots of power, lots of violence. This album has grown on me tremendously. I consider it one of the best albums of 2015.
