The Second Brightest Star The Second Brightest Star
  2. Decomposed
    by Sleepy Driver
    00:00/00:00
Underneath The Shadows Underneath The Shadows
If anything, Decomposed is less an experiment and more a magnifying glass on what Sleepy Driver have always done well as a band and not just as a vehicle for Hick's distractingly good lyrics. It's especially great to hear so much more of Ethan Young-Lai's keys that have provided such an important and unique texture to the band's Americana sound.
  3. Grimspound (hi resolution audio)
    by Big Big Train
    00:00/00:00
A Mead Hall in Winter A Mead Hall in Winter
They've actually done it again; Grimspound is upward & forward for BBT. This one focuses on the band *as a band* to fantastic results, with a deft integration of Anglicana & Prog.
  4. Your Saturday Sins Limited Edition 7" Record
    by Dw Dunphy
    00:00/00:00
Side One: Your Saturday Sins Side One: Your Saturday Sins
It ticks most of our boxes: this is independent music, progressive in nature, full of hooks, and pressed to vinyl.
  5. The First Thing That Came To Mind
    by Dw Dunphy
    00:00/00:00
    Ancients Ancients
Once again taking a 'release songs as they come' approach, Dw Dunphy's latest album features progressive pop, indie rock, and cinematic structures. It's lo-fi but well-produced; largely instrumental but hook-y throughout. There's lots of big drum kits and percussion, distorted guitars, and textured keys here, with intelligent and slightly cynical lyrics to anchor the vocal tracks. Try turning down the volume on TV political commentary and using this as a soundtrack.

by Bill Mallonee & The Big Sky Ramblers (Jan. 2017)
    00:00/00:00
    TWO~FINGER WAVE TWO~FINGER WAVE
Plenty of great guitar licks and tones, and the return of Bill Mallonee on high harmony vocals! "Two-Finger Wave" celebrates the simple kindness of a stranger, while "Mesmerized" explores the hollowness that even positive religious experiences can leave behind.
  11. Folklore (hi-resolution audio)
    by Big Big Train
    00:00/00:00
The Transit of Venus Across the Sun The Transit of Venus Across the Sun
Folklore is a strong contender for Prog album of the year. The songwriting and concept are tight, the music is lush and expansive, and the natural world plays a delightful starring role. "Pastoral Prog," perhaps, ala early Genesis or Jethro Tull, but there are lovely hints of XTC here as well. Mostly, this is just Big Big Train completely in their stride, with a big band that can back up big songs.

    by Bill Mallonee
    00:00/00:00
SKIN GETS THIN (WHEN THE NEON PASSES THROUGH) SKIN GETS THIN (WHEN THE NEON PASSES THROUGH)
A slightly less raucous companion to "The Power and The Glory" and "Amber Waves," live favorites such as "Rural Route" and "Coal Dust Soul" get the full studio treatment here.

Muriah lends her gorgeous vocals all over "Beatitude," and some nice pedal steels additions strengthen the musical tracks (over the earlier WPA demos).

Worth the price of admission just for the proper studio version of "Neon Passes Through," and the plenty-raucous "Bread & Circuses."

(You've Still Got) The Devil Left To Pay (You've Still Got) The Devil Left To Pay
The post-Audible Sigh 3-piece of VOL; garage-y, noise-y, and brash. Bill puts his acoustic guitar through a sonic beating, to good effect. You really need this live document in order to tell a more complete story for the "Audible Sigh" band and songs.

Also, "The Devil Left To Pay" and "Tapping Out The Signal" were never released in studio form.

Loosely a concept album about the end of the music industry as we’ve known it, this album features William Shatner, prog-a-billy, a spot-on James Bond theme, and even a lovely piano elegy. It’s also a contender for best album art and packaging, with gorgeous designs by Freyja Dean. Cinematic, progressive, singer-songwriter with lush production.

  26. SLOW TRAUMA
by Bill Mallonee & The Big Sky Ramblers (March/2016)
    00:00/00:00
    HIGH~BEAM HIGH~BEAM
Since 2013's Dolorosa, Bill Mallonee has been perfecting his self-produced High Desert Album. While the themes and characters remain familiar, the arrangements, performances, and mixes on Slow Trauma take another mesa-sized leap forward. This is lush Americana that feels like you've hitch-hiked stretches of the Southwest that you've never even seen. There's a reason that No Depression magazine keeps hyping Mallonee's work, and this album wears that rationale on its sleeve.

FOREVER FOR YOU FOREVER FOR YOU
A few new songs to start things out, then a collection of some of the best songs from Bill's previous Christmas EPs.

"Oh, Winter Light" has a great live feel, and "Forever For You" captures the jazzy winter feel of old 1950's Christmas Classics. It's got Crosby's spirit, if not quite his sound.

Locket Full of Moonlight (Casual Reprise) Locket Full of Moonlight (Casual Reprise)
The sound of heartbreak and distance. Every note aches, and that's not even counting the lyrics. Much moodier and more atmospheric than the previous VOL releases, though this could almost be a "WinterDark" inversion of "Summershine."

As a bonus, this UK version includes some of VOL's last and best tracks, such as "Hat in Hand" and "Going South."

by Bill Mallonee & Muriah Rose
    00:00/00:00
THE GOLDEN GATHERING IN THE GOLDEN GATHERING IN
4-song studio EP bundled with a Live LP. The 4 new songs show off Bill's continuing mastery of his own production and exploration of new instruments. The live album is unique in that it leaves in pretty much all the banter; it also features an excellent setlist with several songs that have never shown up on previous official live albums.
