    by Mamalarky
    track 00:00/00:00
Mamalarky manage to capture their live energy, spunk, and personality SO well on this release. Everything, from the songwriting to the performances to the production, showcases the band as neither nostalgic and retrospective nor jumping on any contemporary bandwagon of gimmicks; rather, they blend myriad influences across many decades and genres in a way that feels fun above all else. I just wrote so many words for one song. Just listen to it and spread the love

Sinister Waters II Sinister Waters II
Here is a band escaping their trappings as a psych group by turning to progressive rock. With hints of Yes and Genesis, but a more drugged aesthetic than either of those titans ever mustered, Kairon; IRSE has dropped an album full of great ideas. The prouduction does make the album feel a bit sparse at times, which is interesting given the relationship to Oranssi Pazuzu here, but it remains an engaging affair nonetheless. Dig it!
  6. Terminal Redux

Pillars of Sand Pillars of Sand
Even with the recent turmoil in this band's lineup, Terminal Redux is a sight to behold, and a magnificent achievement in a genre that is more than guilty of stagnation. The songwriting here is more ambitious and varied than any Vektor record before, and while no experience of theirs will likely match the first time I heard Black Future, this album is more grand, violent, and entertaining than any prior output. One of the best albums of 2016, without a doubt!
  7. Trance Of Death
    by Venenum
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    Cold Threat Cold Threat
This album really attempts to push death metal into a realm of very vintage prog. Mostly, it succeeds, especially in the last three tracks of the record. However, this shake up of styles around the midway point in its runtime makes the album lack cohesion. It feels as if the band struggled to tie their metal tendencies with these explorative realms. Nonetheless, this is an ambitious record that will stand proudly next to any other death metal release this year. Check it out!

  9. Leave
    by Sadness
    featured track 00:00/00:00
The untouchable words between The untouchable words between
This is a stirring and evocative record that feels like a companion to works by artists like Darkspace and Paysage D'Hiver. However, the palette of textures and tones here goes far beyond what those bands do. Sadness has conjured another wonderful and refreshing blend of melancholy and nostalgia that will stick with you.
