There is a blend of various styles on this release that really appeals to me. Metal can be addled with the rehashing of cliches and tropes so this release is refreshing indeed. The album is accessible without pandering to the listener. Guitars are tight and creative, the bass isn't forgotten in the mix and the drums work is tasteful. The riffs are excellent and the occasional groove surfaces unexpectedly. There is no filler to be found on this album and the songwriting is top notch. This is a must own for any metal or hard rock enthusiast.

A reverb portal opens up before you and takes you to an introspective place. There's definitely an otherworldly vibe to this release and the results (for me) are meditative. I love the chime-y guitars that bounce along the wall of reverb. These two songs soar and I'm highly looking forward to any future releases from this project!

Par le jugement causé par ses poisons. Par le jugement causé par ses poisons.
This is definitely one of my favorite albums of 2015 and was released in time for Halloween! The riffs are excellent, great melodies and hypnotic / hallucinogenic guitar patterns. The arrangements are top notch and don't seem forced. I appreciate that the bass guitar is neither boring or buried in the mix. The drums are punishing and bash it all together. There are also nice synth embellishments to be heard within the songs. What really draws me in is the occasional groove that seems to come out of nowhere but makes sense. The whole album is menacingly catchy too. This one is playing on repeat.

    Sculpting Canyons Sculpting Canyons
Deafest doesn't sound like any other band. I love the use of piano in 'Sculpting Canyons'. Melody is always tastefully used and to the service of the song. This is another tight release and I sense a few tweaks that differentiate it from the others. I always feel uplifted after listening to Deafest; like breathing fresh air.

A Sheep Among The Wolves A Sheep Among The Wolves
I'm a big fan of the first LP so this release was a must own. This LP stands on its own and does not disappoint. The guitar work and tone are both excellent. The drums kill it on all of the tracks without being 'cliche metal drums'. The songs seem meticulously crafted and are truly satisfying to experience. I wish this release was longer because it leaves me (greedily) wanting more. There is no filler to be found here, it's a raging beast to behold.

Embalmer Jams? Meditations in misery? Aural serial killers? Bardo waiting room music? Inverted Schumann resonances? Sound track to a black hole (that your soul is siphoned through)? Dark art for sure that will give your goosebumps, goosebumps. If you let someone else hear you play this album they may think you've lost your mind and maybe you have.

You see a cool looking dog in an alley and you try to get its attention. The dog turns around and bolts towards you completely set on chewing you up. Right before it gets to your leg it stops, pisses on it and indifferently walks away. Oh and the band has one of the Greber guys in it. Bonus.

Blood Upon the Altar Blood Upon the Altar
I like the Gothic / Dark Pop vibe of this release. However, the music is unapologetically metal. The keyboard takes a lead role and it serves these songs well. The guitars are nice and crunchy with good melodies when called for. The vocals are unexpectedly catchy and stitch it all together. I'm interested to see how this band progresses and develops it sounds. Very interesting metal. Check this out!!!!

The yearning and emotion of the performance captured in this recording is stunning. The religious references are really a trope used to help deliver the universal themes that underly all of these songs; that's how I think of it anyway. Sure, you can call it "gospel" but it's the blues all the way through. Garnish with a neat pour of whiskey.

I like the minimal approach. The guitars have subtle details that shine through the waves of delay, listen for them. I like the offhanded quality of the vocal delivery. I always appreciate when a band delivers the goods without coming off as 'trying too hard'.

I love the guitar work from both bands on this release; it's fucked up and disorienting. I like that. I dug the bass on the Predatory Light songs but it was too low in the mix for my tastes so the songs feel a little off balance. Still, this release is a very promising sign of what's to come from both of these bands. Great potential.

If Mallory can keep it together they can continue to evolve and produce better music. I want to live in a world where that happens. This record feel so vital, it would be a tall order to top it but I sense that they can do it. There is a passion and mindfulness amongst them that needs to be shared with the rest of the world. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this gem.
