    by LAST MOON'S DAWN
    00:00/00:00
Unborn / Undying / Unknown Unborn / Undying / Unknown
This is modern dark metal which combines ingredients from various sub-genres, including black metal, doom metal and dark rock, to a soulful melange. In strongest moments the songs even reach an intensity level which I only know from nordic bands like Ghost Brigade. Listen for example to "Unborn / Undying / Unknown", "Dissociation" or "The Awakening". Strong debut!
  8. The Forest Seasons
    by Wintersun
    00:00/00:00
The Forest That Weeps (Summer) The Forest That Weeps (Summer)
A concept album about the seasons is not an innovative idea but a challenge for the composers. Music-wise we can enjoy four symphonic melodic extreme metal tracks, somewhere between Children of Bodom, Ensiferum and Moonsorrow. Although the moods of the songs do not really reflect the character of the seasons in my ears, it is a symphonic pleasure to listen to the four epic pieces. Strangely enough, I like the majestic "Summer" with its male chants and power metal influences the most.

    by Frostvang

    Avsky Avsky
FROSTVANG play dynamic and powerful nordic dark metal. Black Metal is the base, but there is a bunch of other interesting influences. Especially the work of the guitars is fantastic, they produce a lot of memorable riffs and melodies. Rough but still understandable singing rules vocals-wise, but there are variations, like the dark whispers of "Sista Vilan". Last but not least: Although mainly mid-rempo, the songs vary a lot and are quite catchy. One of the finest new discoveries this year!
  11. Another Realm
    by Eoront
    00:00/00:00
The Order of Light The Order of Light
This is a damned monumental atmospheric Black Metal release and you definitely hear the Eastern European origin. Some elements remind me on Drudkh or Negura Bunget, the mood of "Dreamcatcher" on Old Forest. Not the worst references! It is a fantastic mix and a dark pleasure to listen to this epic journey. There is so much to discover, even 70s organs here and there. Strangely enough, my two favourite songs are place at the end of the album. Check it out!

  13. The Force Of The Ancient Land
    by Eldamar
    00:00/00:00
Spirit Of The North Spirit Of The North
Nice and very atmospheric black metal. Somewhere in Summoning's direction, but not as dramatic and intense. I like the female "Aaaahaaahs", the fluently played black metal instrumentation and the harsh voice, only the somehow cheap "ding dong ding" keyboard sounds does not really fit to the overall dark and melancholic atmosphere in my opinion. I prefer the moments without them. Anyway, a strong album!
  14. V - Oceans
    by Slow
    00:00/00:00
    Mort Mort
Actually, Funeral Doom is a rather limited genre, so it is challenging to make the step from "being average" to "being excellent". But that is no issue for SLOW at all. Although not really leaving the borders of the genre, they mix dark syntheziser and piano tones with slow, sometimes pounding metal and a mighty growling voice to five 10 minutes+ monoliths. Mighty monuments of dark feelings for black souls!
  15. Channeling Death and Devil
    by Israthoum
    00:00/00:00
    Acquiescas Fata Acquiescas Fata
"Channeling Death and Devil" is a complex audio work. It is evil, sinister and definitely no easy black metal listening. Maybe not as progressive or psychedelic as Leviathan or the like, but similar disturbing. If you like pure blackness without softening post black metal or even gothic elements, check this one out. The songs may need some time to unfold their full virtuosity, but it is worth to be patient and listen to them repeatedly!
  16. Oathbearer
    by FELLWARDEN
    00:00/00:00
    Guardian Unbound Guardian Unbound
Even without knowing that FELLWARDEN is a FEN-related project, such associations came up quite often during my first listening experience of this pagan metal masterpiece. Sometimes it is raw, sometimes it appears dreamy. The songwriting always leaves enough room for melodic instrumental parts, marked by atmospheric keyboards and yearning clean vocals from time to time. And to be honest: I like "Oathbearer" more than FEN's latest release, as it is catchy and offers more memorable moments. Great!

  24. Morke
    by Morke
    00:00/00:00
    Slutten Slutten
This release is a rough and cold black metal output. It sounds rather old-school or timeless, if youl like. There are no fancy keyboards, no suicidal depression and no post-something elements. Aggression and evilness are the trademarks of MORKE. Atmosphere-wise it reminds me on later Satyricon releases, swinging between slow and evil doom-like parts ("Mors") and piercing fast forward songs ("Slutten"). Very gloomy!
  25. Silhouettes Of Stars
    by MIDNIGHT ODYSSEY
    00:00/00:00
The Night Has Come For Me The Night Has Come For Me
MIDNIGHT ODYSSEY are one of few absolutely unique projects in black metal. Atmospheric space trips of a kind! Even the "2nd class"-songs, which are compiled here, are excellent and worth to be published. Of course the album misses a bit the central theme as the songs are from different periods of time, but that is not really an issue. High class from the first tone to the last!
  26. Winter Black Metal
    by W
    00:00/00:00
I Come From Afar I Come From Afar
Basically, I purchased this split album because of Skogsande, who play ambient, atmospheric black metal, well performed. But the big surprise was the part of "W" (Winter? Witch? Warlord? Whatsoever?). No matter, what W means, we hear atmospheric underground black metal with this special obscure touch to make it a quite memorable listening experience. In the best moments I think of Emperor's "In the nightside eclipse", a timeless classic. Listen to "W" and try if you feel the same magic?!
  27. Split with Oldmoon
    by W
    00:00/00:00
    Become Winter Become Winter
The latest split releases of W really present excellent atmospheric black metal. Raw and melodic at the same time! Compared to the first releases they are accompanied with a certain catchiness. Timeless, good stuff!
  28. As We Were When We Were Not
    by Mountains Crave
    00:00/00:00
    Theophany Theophany
This is excellent atmospheric Black Metal, without old-fashioned evilness, but with a lot of melancholic energy and dramatic atmosphere. You may call it avantgarde in a positive way. The highlight of the album is the final track "Theophany", which combines all the strengths. Highly recommended!
  29. Істина / Verity
    by Nokturnal Mortum
    00:00/00:00
    Вовчі Ягоди Вовчі Ягоди
The fabulous antecessor "Voice of Steel" has become my personal metal album for eternity. So, expectations have been high and fortunately, "Verity" spreads a similar virtuosity. The electrifying songs are well arranged in the minutest details and even after listening to the album about 40 times, I still discover new details in the folkloristic pagan metal melange. Maybe not an album for eternity as its unique forerunner, but at least a strong candidate for the album of the year 2017!
  30. Further Nowhere
    by Cold Insight
    00:00/00:00
The Light We Are The Light We Are
This is a really beautiful melodic doom death album. Especially the work of the story telling guitars is overwhelming, full of soul and light sadness. For me, the atmosphere is "Finnish", as bands like Rapture, late Thy Serpent or Ghost Brigade spread the same melancholy. So, "Further Nowhere" is maybe not really original, but nonethelesse very convincing because of its gothic atmosphere, powerful dark vocals, catchy song-writing and the warm sound. It is a pleasure to listen to, even in summer!
  31. The Symbol Of Death
    by Disbelief
    00:00/00:00
Rest in Peace Rest in Peace
7 years after their last release, DISBELIEF are back with full force. Powerful and emotionally intense like not too many other extreme metal bands, the "Symbol of Death" is also a "Symbol of Strength". Besides all heaviness and anger the songs are catchy and always characterized by a certain trace of melancholy and sadness. Honest metal on a gut level! It is really applaudable, that they recurred with such a strong album. I hope, we do not have to wait again a seven years for the next!
  32. Overcoming the Existence
by As Long As I Can
    00:00/00:00
Overcoming the Existence Overcoming the Existence
As long as I can performs pure depressive underground black metal with raw and clean vocals, raw black metal parts and ambient elements. The talent for creating a dark and melancholic atmosphere is definitely there. Similar to Coldworld, but like an unpolished and less mature version. An unpolished diamond!
  33. The Ride
    by Athelstan
    00:00/00:00
Keepers of the Dawn Keepers of the Dawn
As a supporter of Forefather, I also had to purchase this release. The two tracks with vocals remind me of course on Forefather and also the melodic instrumentals are not too far away from the main band. Melodic pagan metal for thinking on the old times. The opener "Keepers of the Dawn" is the catchy highlight of the release!
  34. Tales From a Cloud-Born Land EP
    by Forefather
    00:00/00:00
Out of Time Out of Time
FOREFATHER are one of few bands, which are easily recognizable, as their melodic heathen metal has a lot of trademarks, especially the outstanding clean vocals. And they always deliver quality and fine songwriting. This EP is no exception and presents a variety of interesting songs, some more thrashy ("One blood and one bone"), others more melancholic and relaxed ("Out of time").
  35. Šliacham Zabytych
    by RAVEN THRONE
    00:00/00:00
Dzie ty, zima, radzilasia Dzie ty, zima, radzilasia
"Dzie ty, zima, radzilasia" is a fantastic black metal song, do not miss it! It is intense, catchy and has the certain dark atmosphere which characterizes black metal as the emotionally most profound music genre. I can listen to it 10 times in a row without being bored. When the last tone has faded, I can still hear it, like a phantom, which haunts me. I think RAVEN THRONE got their genious moment when they wrote this song. But also the rest of the release is solid atmospheric black metal!
  36. Exuvia
    by The Ruins Of Beverast
    00:00/00:00
Takitum Tootem (Trance) Takitum Tootem (Trance)
THE RUINS OF BEVERAST are quite unique in the black metal or extreme metal genre in general. They are far away from playing simple and nice black metal sing-a-longs. Instead they create real audio dramas. "Exuvia" is shamanistic, full of ambient soundscapes and presents several black voices and choirs, sometimes clean, but mainly screaming or growling. The overall pace is doom-like, although there are some speed explosions. Deep-dive into this ethereal black abyss and discover a new cosmos!
  37. "The Abstract Escape"
    by Lying Figures
    00:00/00:00
    The Mirror The Mirror
"The Abstract Escape" is a dark doom death metal output. Sinister growling and powerful parts meet quiet moments with clean and sad vocals. It is similar to Cold Insight's new output but heavier, rough, more desperate, less catchy and without the typical Scandinavian melodic melancholy. Extreme metal from France for the advanced listener who is willing to invest some time for repeated listening to unwrap the full beauty of the songs!
  38. Kelle Surut Soi
    by Havukruunu
    00:00/00:00
    Noidanhauta Noidanhauta
This is a powerful pagan metal release. Based on black metal, the epic melange also contains influences from traditional heavy metal (wild guitar soli) and some fervent "Ahahahaha"-chorus. Mainly, the pace is up-tempo and pounding, but they also now very well how to perform majestic mid-tempo parts. Maybe the songs are not as complex as for example Moonsorrow's work, but the dark Finnish atmosphere is quite the same. Highly recommended!
  39. Waldeinsamkeit EP
    by Rauhnåcht
    00:00/00:00
    Hochgewitters Majestät Hochgewitters Majestät
I love Rauhnåcht's excellent debut "Vorweltschweigen" and this EP is of the same mighty quality. Inexorably, like slowly creeping lava, the doomy black metal tracks conquer the listeners mind. Enhanced with a lot of atmospheric elements the dark songs are highly intense. Listen to the opener "Hochgewitters Majestät" and you will be caught as well. Fantastic!
  40. Urzeitgeist
    by Rauhnåcht
    00:00/00:00
    Einsam Ist's, Durch's Moor Zu Geh'n Einsam Ist's, Durch's Moor Zu Geh'n
Compared to Rauhnåcht's former outputs, this release is far less doomy. You will realize a higher variety in pace and quite a lot melodic elements. Personally, I prefer the doomy and darker past of the band, as the songs appeared more intense and individual in style.
But don't get me wrong: There are no weak spots on the album and it is for sure highly recommended for every supporter of melodic Black Metal!
  41. All Paths Lead To Death
    by Amiensus
    00:00/00:00
Mouth Of The Abyss Mouth Of The Abyss
The latest full album "Ascension" was one of the highlights in 2015. A well balanced masterpiece of melodic black metal with soulful clean singing parts and atmospheric quiet moments! Compared to this unique milestone, "All paths lead to death" is heavier without being more evil. The trademarks mentioned above are reduced, but you still recognize that this is an AMIENSUS output, as their style is one-of-a-kind.
  42. Seasons of Desolation
    by Enisum
    00:00/00:00
Road to my Home Road to my Home
Modern extreme metal with a lot of black metal elements, but also doom and clean female vocals. Quite energetic and a good mix of well performed instrumental parts and emotional vocals. Especially the work of the guitars is excellent, they transport a lot of catchy moments to remember. Listen for example to "Road to my home".
  43. Alien World
    by Below the Sun
    00:00/00:00
    Mirrors Mirrors
This is really "heavy listening", the songs are extremely intense, quite complex and slow to medium in pace. It sounds like a psychedelic version of funeral doom. Tough tunes for the dark season.
  44. Trautonist
    by Trautonist
    00:00/00:00
    Stay Stay
Recently, I was looking for new stuff from the German black metal band Vargnatt, but I "just" discovered TRAUTONIST, a side project, maybe even current main project. It sounds like a post-black metal version of Vargnatt with female vocals assisting the raw screams. The songs show all variations between dream-like melancholy and furious black metal parts. So, they are really dynamic and the female vocals are a fine addition, but for me Vargnatt is even more intense. Anyway, a great release!
  45. Demonwoods
    by Kalmankantaja
    00:00/00:00
The Wanderer In Eternity The Wanderer In Eternity
Epic and melancholic black metal with a majestic, slightly rough atmosphere. The tracks have a good flow, are somehow "easy listening" and wonderful relaxing for the dark-hearted metal head. Nice as always!
