    favorite track 00:00/00:00
The Night Has Come For Me The Night Has Come For Me
MIDNIGHT ODYSSEY are one of few absolutely unique projects in black metal. Atmospheric space trips of a kind! Even the "2nd class"-songs, which are compiled here, are excellent and worth to be published. Of course the album misses a bit the central theme as the songs are from different periods of time, but that is not really an issue. High class from the first tone to the last!

    favorite track 00:00/00:00
I Come From Afar I Come From Afar
Basically, I purchased this split album because of Skogsande, who play ambient, atmospheric black metal, well performed. But the big surprise was the part of "W" (Winter? Witch? Warlord? Whatsoever?). No matter, what W means, we hear atmospheric underground black metal with this special obscure touch to make it a quite memorable listening experience. In the best moments I think of Emperor's "In the nightside eclipse", a timeless classic. Listen to "W" and try if you feel the same magic?!

    Wild Winds Wild Winds
The latest split releases of W really present excellent atmospheric black metal. Raw and melodic at the same time! Compared to the first releases they are accompanied with a certain catchiness. Timeless, good stuff!
  12. As We Were When We Were Not
    by Mountains Crave
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    Theophany Theophany
This is excellent atmospheric Black Metal, without old-fashioned evilness, but with a lot of melancholic energy and dramatic atmosphere. You may call it avantgarde in a positive way. The highlight of the album is the final track "Theophany", which combines all the strengths. Highly recommended!
  13. Істина / Verity
    by Nokturnal Mortum
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    Вовчі Ягоди Вовчі Ягоди
The fabulous antecessor "Voice of Steel" has become my personal metal album for eternity. So, expectations have been high and fortunately, "Verity" spreads a similar virtuosity. The electrifying songs are well arranged in the minutest details and even after listening to the album about 40 times, I still discover new details in the folkloristic pagan metal melange. Maybe not an album for eternity as its unique forerunner, but at least a strong candidate for the album of the year 2017!
  14. Further Nowhere
    by Cold Insight
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
The Light We Are The Light We Are
This is a really beautiful melodic doom death album. Especially the work of the story telling guitars is overwhelming, full of soul and light sadness. For me, the atmosphere is "Finnish", as bands like Rapture, late Thy Serpent or Ghost Brigade spread the same melancholy. So, "Further Nowhere" is maybe not really original, but nonethelesse very convincing because of its gothic atmosphere, powerful dark vocals, catchy song-writing and the warm sound. It is a pleasure to listen to, even in summer!
  15. The Symbol Of Death
    by Disbelief
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
Rest in Peace Rest in Peace
7 years after their last release, DISBELIEF are back with full force. Powerful and emotionally intense like not too many other extreme metal bands, the "Symbol of Death" is also a "Symbol of Strength". Besides all heaviness and anger the songs are catchy and always characterized by a certain trace of melancholy and sadness. Honest metal on a gut level! It is really applaudable, that they recurred with such a strong album. I hope, we do not have to wait again a seven years for the next!
  16. Overcoming the Existence
by As Long As I Can
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
Overcoming the Existence Overcoming the Existence
As long as I can performs pure depressive underground black metal with raw and clean vocals, raw black metal parts and ambient elements. The talent for creating a dark and melancholic atmosphere is definitely there. Similar to Coldworld, but like an unpolished and less mature version. An unpolished diamond!
  17. The Ride
    by Athelstan
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
Keepers of the Dawn Keepers of the Dawn
As a supporter of Forefather, I also had to purchase this release. The two tracks with vocals remind me of course on Forefather and also the melodic instrumentals are not too far away from the main band. Melodic pagan metal for thinking on the old times. The opener "Keepers of the Dawn" is the catchy highlight of the release!
  18. Tales From a Cloud-Born Land EP
    by Forefather
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
Out of Time Out of Time
FOREFATHER are one of few bands, which are easily recognizable, as their melodic heathen metal has a lot of trademarks, especially the outstanding clean vocals. And they always deliver quality and fine songwriting. This EP is no exception and presents a variety of interesting songs, some more thrashy ("One blood and one bone"), others more melancholic and relaxed ("Out of time").
  19. Šliacham Zabytych
    by RAVEN THRONE
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
Dzie ty, zima, radzilasia Dzie ty, zima, radzilasia
"Dzie ty, zima, radzilasia" is a fantastic black metal song, do not miss it! It is intense, catchy and has the certain dark atmosphere which characterizes black metal as the emotionally most profound music genre. I can listen to it 10 times in a row without being bored. When the last tone has faded, I can still hear it, like a phantom, which haunts me. I think RAVEN THRONE got their genious moment when they wrote this song. But also the rest of the release is solid atmospheric black metal!
  20. Exuvia
    by The Ruins Of Beverast
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
Takitum Tootem (Trance) Takitum Tootem (Trance)
THE RUINS OF BEVERAST are quite unique in the black metal or extreme metal genre in general. They are far away from playing simple and nice black metal sing-a-longs. Instead they create real audio dramas. "Exuvia" is shamanistic, full of ambient soundscapes and presents several black voices and choirs, sometimes clean, but mainly screaming or growling. The overall pace is doom-like, although there are some speed explosions. Deep-dive into this ethereal black abyss and discover a new cosmos!
  21. "The Abstract Escape"
    by Lying Figures
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    The Mirror The Mirror
"The Abstract Escape" is a dark doom death metal output. Sinister growling and powerful parts meet quiet moments with clean and sad vocals. It is similar to Cold Insight's new output but heavier, rough, more desperate, less catchy and without the typical Scandinavian melodic melancholy. Extreme metal from France for the advanced listener who is willing to invest some time for repeated listening to unwrap the full beauty of the songs!
  22. Kelle Surut Soi
    by Havukruunu
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    Noidanhauta Noidanhauta
This is a powerful pagan metal release. Based on black metal, the epic melange also contains influences from traditional heavy metal (wild guitar soli) and some fervent "Ahahahaha"-chorus. Mainly, the pace is up-tempo and pounding, but they also now very well how to perform majestic mid-tempo parts. Maybe the songs are not as complex as for example Moonsorrow's work, but the dark Finnish atmosphere is quite the same. Highly recommended!
  23. Waldeinsamkeit EP
    by Rauhnåcht
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    Hochgewitters Majestät Hochgewitters Majestät
I love Rauhnåcht's excellent debut "Vorweltschweigen" and this EP is of the same mighty quality. Inexorably, like slowly creeping lava, the doomy black metal tracks conquer the listeners mind. Enhanced with a lot of atmospheric elements the dark songs are highly intense. Listen to the opener "Hochgewitters Majestät" and you will be caught as well. Fantastic!
  24. Urzeitgeist
    by Rauhnåcht
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    Einsam Ist's, Durch's Moor Zu Geh'n Einsam Ist's, Durch's Moor Zu Geh'n
Compared to Rauhnåcht's former outputs, this release is far less doomy. You will realize a higher variety in pace and quite a lot melodic elements. Personally, I prefer the doomy and darker past of the band, as the songs appeared more intense and individual in style.
But don't get me wrong: There are no weak spots on the album and it is for sure highly recommended for every supporter of melodic Black Metal!
  25. All Paths Lead To Death
    by Amiensus
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
Mouth Of The Abyss Mouth Of The Abyss
The latest full album "Ascension" was one of the highlights in 2015. A well balanced masterpiece of melodic black metal with soulful clean singing parts and atmospheric quiet moments! Compared to this unique milestone, "All paths lead to death" is heavier without being more evil. The trademarks mentioned above are reduced, but you still recognize that this is an AMIENSUS output, as their style is one-of-a-kind.
  26. Seasons of Desolation
    by Enisum
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
Road to my Home Road to my Home
Modern extreme metal with a lot of black metal elements, but also doom and clean female vocals. Quite energetic and a good mix of well performed instrumental parts and emotional vocals. Especially the work of the guitars is excellent, they transport a lot of catchy moments to remember. Listen for example to "Road to my home".
  27. Alien World
    by Below the Sun
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    Mirrors Mirrors
This is really "heavy listening", the songs are extremely intense, quite complex and slow to medium in pace. It sounds like a psychedelic version of funeral doom. Tough tunes for the dark season.
  28. Trautonist
    by Trautonist
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    Stay Stay
Recently, I was looking for new stuff from the German black metal band Vargnatt, but I "just" discovered TRAUTONIST, a side project, maybe even current main project. It sounds like a post-black metal version of Vargnatt with female vocals assisting the raw screams. The songs show all variations between dream-like melancholy and furious black metal parts. So, they are really dynamic and the female vocals are a fine addition, but for me Vargnatt is even more intense. Anyway, a great release!
  29. Demonwoods
    by Kalmankantaja
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
The Wanderer In Eternity The Wanderer In Eternity
Epic and melancholic black metal with a majestic, slightly rough atmosphere. The tracks have a good flow, are somehow "easy listening" and wonderful relaxing for the dark-hearted metal head. Nice as always!
  30. Emotionale Ödnis
    by Tardigrada
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    Erschöpft Erschöpft
"Emotionale Ödnis" is for sure no "emotional wasteland". Instead, the release is full of soulful atmospheric black metal with desperate vocals, rich in deep emotions. So far it is nothing really new, but who cares, if the result is as perfect as this one? A milestone of this genre, such a mix of epic anthems and short instrumental interludes could not be better performed! If you like early Cordworld or still remember Silencer, you should check this.
  31. Visions
    by Anomalie
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
Vision V: Starless Nights Vision V: Starless Nights
This is a fantastic mélange of several dark metal styles, such as black metal, doom metal or gothic metal. The songs are absolutely gut-wrenching and full of soul. There are no weak tracks, they all develop an intense and honest atmosphere and grow with each rotation. Even after listening to the album several times in a row, I still detect new details. Powerful melancholy at its best!
  32. Ascetic Eventide
    by Pure Wrath
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    Clouds Retiring Clouds Retiring
So far, Indonesia is not well known for atmospheric, nordic black metal, but most likely that will change with this release. Epic and melodic, yet aggressive and raw enough, this majestic masterpiece is a "must hear" for all supporters of Saor, Kalmankantaja or the like. The energy of the tracks is incredibly high and acoustic interludes with flute or other exotic sounds which lead into a blasting part give the whole story a huge dynamic. First big surprise this year!
  33. Winter
    by Fen
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    II (Penance) II (Penance)
Fen is the oppposite of easy listening in black metal. The tracks are complex and epic, but not overloaded. Every track develops in a fluent manner, there are no unlogical or strange breaks in songwriting and the whole Winter concept. But as always with this unique band: There are no quick hits or simple sing-a-long refrains. The listener has to inhale this mighty opus repeatedly to let it flower and discover its grandness. FEN are of the same kind of genius, like Tool are in alternative rock!
  34. Tales of the Enchanted Woods
    by Grima
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    Ritual Ritual
GRIMA are another black pearl within Naturmacht's catalogue! Incredible, how many fantastic new acts publish their stuff there. "Tales of enchanted woods" has it all: It is majestic, melancholic, folkloristic, aggressive, melodic, dreamy, soulful, atmospheric, wild - simply an intense, dynamic and epic black pagan metal experience with screaming and growling on the mike. Intoxicating!
  35. Widrstand
    by Tardigrada
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    Hoffnungslos Hoffnungslos
As I am addicted to TARDIGRADA'S latest output "Emotionale Ödnis" I also purchased this earlier EP. And I am glad that I did, as the melancholic atmosphere and the depressive vocals are quite the same. Only the obscure sound is more underground and less clear and powerful as on the current masterpiece. Anyway, these guys are real masters of epic black majesty!
  36. March On Gravitation
    by FROMHELL
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    Summoning Stars Summoning Stars
FROMHELL, another unique band from Indonesia(!) in Naturmacht's portfolio. Based on black metal, they play extremely varied and progressive extreme metal. Sometimes its sounds similar to Forefather (clean singing) and sometimes I feel Keep of Kalessin-moments. But they are more than a simple copy, they follow their own vision and style. I suppose, this atmospheric album will have a sustainable long-time impact!
  37. Demo IV
    by Kalmankantaja
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    Muinaiset Tulet Muinaiset Tulet
It is not really easy to keep the overview about Kalmankantaja's releases. But one thing is for sure: You will always get atmospheric black metal from the Finns, sometimes more depressive, sometimes more ambient, but always good sombre quality. Demo IV does not make a difference here and contains even a fantastic track called "Munaiset Tulet".
  38. Skogsande / W - Winter black metal (Split)

  39. LandawarijaR
    by Helheim
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    LandawarijaR LandawarijaR
For more than 20 years Helheim provide us with first class pagan metal, but for me they are in their best phase ever since their latest release "raunijaR". Fortunately, "LandawarijaR" is of the same exceptional quality: Mature and progressive, very inspired, even soulful, but still with a precious raw edge which links their actual releases to their past.
The songwriting is really ingenious as you hear passages, which stay in mind immediately, but also new things with every repeat. Mighty!
  40. Imaginarium
    by Antiquus Scriptum
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
A Moment Of Clarity A Moment Of Clarity
ANTIQUUS SCRIPTUM belong to the rare selection of bands which are recognizable immediately. Mainly because of the distinctive clear vocals, but also because of the rousing songwriting. The basic style is groovy and catchy, but also full of nice details and unique sounds. This special symphonic thrash death whatsoever mixture leaves me always back in very good temper. A quite strange effect of metal like this, but a nice one. :-) If you are looking for something really peculiar, check it!
  41. City Of Slaughter
    by Clandestine Blaze
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
Remembrance Of A Ruin Remembrance Of A Ruin
Clandestine Blaze is a trademark for raw and uncompromising true black metal. No melodic gimmicks, no depression, just a full fist in the face. Intense!
  42. Mountain Hymns
    by Beorn's Hall
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
Lord of Silver Fountains Lord of Silver Fountains
BEORN'S HALL perform timeless underground black metal, which is atmospheric and melodic but also very raw. This could also be a release from the 90s, it will be interesting to see, how this band develops.
  43. In Memoriam
    by Mistur
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    Distant Peaks Distant Peaks
This pagan metal album is epic, mighty, aggressive, but also atmospheric and reminds me in some melodic moments of the nordic majesty of Windir ("Downfall") or in progressive parts of the most glorious times of Opeth ("Distant Peaks"). Both, the clean and the harsh dark vocals are powerful and capable of transporting soulful moments. A first class output!
  44. Welcome The Dead
    by CREST OF DARKNESS
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
    Borrowed Life Borrowed Life
I know CREST OF DARKNESS and their sinister dark musical brew from the late 90s and was slightly surprised to see them still active. Later, I was even more surprised, when I realized, that "Welcome The Dead" is their best output to date! Their hellish, thrashy, powerful and aggressive black metal is somehow old school (no depressiveness, no female vocals, no post-whatsover elements, no ambient melodies,...) but effective as a hammer on a nail. It is black and simply METAL!
  45. Those Nervous Surgeons
    by Click Click
    favorite track 00:00/00:00
Man in a Suit Man in a Suit
Long ago, during my musical youth and before I walked down the metal path I listened to EBM and acts like Skinny Puppy, Neon Judgement and above all Vomito Negro and CLICK CLICK.
I thought, they disappeared forever, until I recently detected this album from 2014. What a nice surprise! Although the release fits perfectly in their discography, sound- and vocalwise, it also appears fresh and not outdated or something. Dark, melancholic, atmospheric electro! Looking forward for more sweet stuff :-)
