This album hits a lot harder once you learn the backstory and context it was made in. A masterclass in ambient and electronica and one of my favorite albums of all time.
Half of these songs feel like jokes created in one night with some drunken friends. The other half feel like otherworldly ambient experiences masterfully crafted by a messiah. Still somehow feels coherent and flows well all the way through.
Even though this is just a collection of old songs on C418's web server, it's quickly become one of my favorite albums from him. The first five tracks can only be described as pure bliss.
Each song utilizes a blend of Array Mbiras and chiptune that flow so seamlessly. I also love the brilliance of the different takes on songs we've heard previously on the album. One of the most unique albums I've ever heard.
This is one of the least popular and poorly received C418 albums and I don't know why. Daniel's vocals is something we rarely see and it's great. I love the danceability to all of these tracks and the fresh takes on old classics.
I disliked this album at first but it's really grown on me. It's extremely weird, varied, minimalistic and unique. I love it. C418 is really good at creating ambience and nuance and I think this album is a shining example of that.
While this isn't the ambient messiah everyone treats this as, that doesn't undermine the sereneness of these tracks. This is by far the better Minecraft album in my opinion.
