You Are Not My Blood You Are Not My Blood
Primarily reviewing for their cover of Matt Kozelek/Desertshore's "You Are Not My Blood", because that's just how great that song is. Gutter Gods and the title track to start offer a good juxtaposition to the slow, clean sludge of the final track. I was fond of their additions of these qualities to the latest record, and would love to hear them explore the contrast of the two fighting spirits- slow sludge rock, and pummeling hardcore- more.
  5. Folie
    by A Novelist
His Kingdom is Vast His Kingdom is Vast
An album written about a Revolution in France, Folie is a whirlwind of pragmatic, shredding prog guitar melodies layered against modest bass, evocative mixed vocals, and high velocity post-hardcore drums. Whichever genre this is, whichever formula they desired, they've done it right. 9/10
  6. Torture World
    by Great American Ghost
    Kingmaker Kingmaker
A local band from nearby Manchester, NH this band does not f*ck around and leaves no sloppy seconds. They come in, screw your shit up, and leave satisfied. This album is no exception to that mentality. They take what's great about bands like Bolt Thrower, Gojira, Kreator, Suffocation, Earth Crisis and more, and toss it into a high-octane modern package fit with massive sound.
This EP is a solid 10, for me, and it makes me deadlift harder. ;)
  7. Oh What The Future Holds
    by Fit For An Autopsy
    In Shadows In Shadows
How a band as iconic and as special as this can continually abide by their own set of musical rules yet change their strategy just slightly enough to remain prescient with each release, so often escapes me. The machine-oriented rhythms influenced by Gojira return and shine again through Will and Co's writing on tracks like Far From Heaven and Savages, which meet with Joe Bad's vocal aligments throughout- especially pushing through on In Shadows and Collateral. This album f*cks! 8.5/10
  8. EP Self Titled
    by MARE
They Sent You They Sent You
Everyone knows this record was ahead of its time, and still is. Each time I come back to it, I am reminded of its beauteous unpredictability. No matter how many times I hear it (albeit purposefully few), it feels fresh, and unique. Music simply does not sound this whole! Anisette and They Sent You are simply incredible.
  9. Rheia
    by Oathbreaker
    Immortals Immortals
Where do I begin? As 2016's top album choice for me after much deliberation, the creative journey of this record is a work of art that evolved with me as a listener. This album is how you do modern, cascadian black metal correctly. Evocative vocality meets washy, droning dark guitars in a shrill cry of birdsong, and the mausoleum of harsh vocal highs Caro is known for lend themselves beautifully to this progressive and expansive oil macabre pressed in wax. You will not be disappointed.
