    The Grim The Grim
These guys are vicious and vital. This record is the first banger of 2021 for my part. Fun, heavy, and worth your time.

Melodic black metal that hits me right in the sweet spot. Haven’t heard meloblack this good since Mistur’s last record.

Searching for Friends (FINAL FANTASY VI) Searching for Friends (FINAL FANTASY VI)
Having had the privilege of being at the first Distant Worlds concert in Stockholm, I've followed each of these releases religiously. While this one digs further into the series than I'm familiar with (after FFXII), the arrangements are always fantastic and I am particularly in love with the arrangement of "Searching for Friends" from FFVI and the new version of the Opera (though the Swedish Baritone from DW was better). All-in-all, this is an excellent addition to the Distant Worlds series.
  9. A New World: intimate music from FINAL FANTASY - Volume 2

Tower of the Magi (FINAL FANTASY II) Tower of the Magi (FINAL FANTASY II)
A New World is probably my favorite iteration of the Final Fantasy orchestral music series. I love the chamber orchestra sound—it's lush and detailed and it translates to record better than a full orchestra. Furthermore, the choice of songs to work with is fantastic and the choices on the first volume were inspired and Vol. 2 doesn't disappoint. "Tower of Magi," "A Place to Call Home," and "Selbina" are special standouts.

    Deception's Masquerade Deception's Masquerade
Acrid evokes the analogy of a boxer for me: float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. This record shows remarkable alacrity with songs that work their way through groove, thrash, grind or Maiden-y guitar solos. Its tracks are dexterous, catchy and fun. My favorite straight up melodeath from 2018.

  12. Sleep at the Edge of the Earth
    by Wilderun
"Like so many things that I absolutely adore, Wilderun lives in the best of many worlds, balancing orchestral, epic metal with folky strains and wandering—with a gusto—into black metal territory, or even thrashy melodeath. Sleep at the Edge of Earth exists in some kind of beautiful Angry Metal Guy goldilocks-zone, making music tailored for me to get gushy over."
  13. This Ruined World
    by Trials
Beat the System to Death Beat the System to Death
"This Ruined World is an excellent record. The songs on here are razor sharp, tightly edited, written to be dense, technical, and immense—and it’s the balance Trials strikes between chugging intensity, harmony, dissonance and a fine understanding of dynamics in all the right places which makes this album stand out. Trials are unapologetically interested in cutting the bullshit and writing great songs."
  14. Conduit
    by King Goat
    Revenants Revenants
It’s special that King Goat came out of nowhere, unsigned and unheralded, with an album full of gripping songs. More impressive still, few debut albums are as artistically focused and coherent as Conduit. Great.
