    Noe Noe
The best album I've heard this year. Nearly 100 minutes of progressive funeral doom of the absolute highest standard. Imagine Opeth around the time of Blackwater Park were a funeral doom band and you probably get the idea.

    Mourn Mourn
Two lengthy laments that weave together elements of Post-Rock, Sludge, Doom, Black Metal, Ambient and more into a couple of tapestries of despair. Both tracks begin serenely enough, but soon descend into anguish as the grindingly heavy riffs and shrieking vocals kick in, which subside back into introspective calm, followed by more anguish - real Bipolar Doom.
Despite the length, neither track becomes boring, with more than enough going on to satisfy all but the most impatient of doom-heads.

Nero (Divine Providence) Nero (Divine Providence)
With a sound that harkens back to the early days of the Second Wave, but with more complex song structures, this is a damn fine way to spend nearly an hour of your time. Apparently some sort of concept album (judging by the song titles something to do with the Roman Empire) but this is largely irrelevant and the music is most definitely king here. Hail to Belgium!

This, Barrows' third album, tells the tale of a man who is abducted from earth and taken to Obsidion, a place where time and space have no meaning and human consciousness has no boundaries. In the real world, this translates into another epic album of cosmic Post-Rock from an extremely talented couple of guys. The atmosphere rises and falls from gentle, soothing passages to soaring heavy sections and although it's an instrumental album, there's a lyrical feeling to the music.

Thick and heavy instrumental Stoner Doom that conjures-up images of a woolly mammoth floundering in the La Brea Tar Pits, unable to extricate itself before sinking into oblivion. Just one thing, though - enough with the old movie samples already!

augury of a silent mass augury of a silent mass
Despite the demo-quality sound of the recording (or maybe because of it), this manages to be both atmospheric and exceedingly heavy Sludge / Doom Metal that laid the groundwork for their brilliant 2017 debut full-length, Cosmic Doom Ritual.

Probably my favourite album of the year to date, this consists of three 10-minute plus tracks of brilliant Atmospheric Doom that really does manage to convey the ominous, unsettling feelings that truly exceptional Doom is capable of.

Arrow & Kiln Arrow & Kiln
An album of Post-Rock inflected Atmospheric Black that has a little more going on than a lot of their contemporaries. Veering from melancholic to discordant to blisteringly heavy, this holds the interest far better than a majority of the Atmo-Black outfits currently doing the rounds.
  40. The Assassination of Julius Caesar
    by Ulver
    00:00/00:00
    Coming Home Coming Home
I've always had a soft spot for a bit of Synthpop, going back to the days of Kraftwerk, Tubeway Army and later, Depeche Mode. While it doesn't especially surprise me that Ulver would release a synth-heavy pop album, what does surprise me is just how good it is.

Out Of Touch Out Of Touch
Go on! Try to guess what a band called Outlaws of Zen sound like. If you guessed bluesy stoner rock then well done, have another shot of bourbon! All they're lacking is a husky-voiced singer in the vein of Wino and the image would be complete. Instead, the singer sounds a bit like the guy out of The Offspring. Still, you can't have everything...
  43. Electric Children

    00:00/00:00
Tales of the Wasteland Tales of the Wasteland
Above average dose of heavy psych, very competently performed with the stand-out, for me, being the 23+ minute closer Tales of the Wasteland. The band really allows this track to build and feature some great psychedelic breaks among the heavy stoner grooves. Also of note are a couple of John Carpenteresque interludes in Interlude and A Reprisal for Julia which add something a little different and serve as nice counterpoints to the fuzzed-up riffs of the rest of the album.
