  1. Hive
    by Hath
    Hive Hive
This is a bit like a Bizarro World version of Opeth's Heritage - let's call it Egatireh - in which rather than expunging the death metal from their sound to fully embrace their prog rock side, Åkerfeldt and co. instead did the precise opposite.

And it's every bit as great as that sounds. Buy it. If you're anything like me, you won't be disappointed.
  2. Of Rot and Ruin
    by Hath
    Usurpation Usurpation
On Of Rot And Ruin, Hath take the awesome but slightly derivative mid-era Opeth meets Bloodbath's The Fathomless Mastery approach of debut EP Hive and build on it, expanding their influences and adding in a whole heap of personality to create what will surely be one of the standout death metal albums of 2019. This absolutely slays. Don't miss it.

    The Sovereign The Sovereign
Mon Dieu! An unbelievably fun and energetic whirlwind of catchy guitars and synths, I've hardly been able to stop listening to Prokopton since the day of its release. Try to get through this album without smiling. You won't be able to.
  8. Par le Sang Versé
    by Véhémence
La Fronde des Anges La Fronde des Anges
Catchy, melodic, uplifting, and all held together by a really fun concept. This is without doubt the black metal album to beat in 2019.

Now, if only I spoke French...

  10. A Sire To The Ghouls Of Lunacy (Experimental Black/Death Metal)
    Panoramic Phantoms Panoramic Phantoms
Experimental yet accessible; sinister yet alluring; unhinged yet strangely cohesive. This album demands repeated listens, but just like its hapless protagonist you may start to question your sanity as you're drawn deeper and deeper into its clutches. Come join the madness.
  11. Empires of Mediocracy
    by DunkelNacht
Amongst the Remnants of Liberty Amongst the Remnants of Liberty
It's clear that this band is pretty pissed off about the way modern society is headed, and they've chanelled that anger into one of the most exciting and creative black/death metal albums I think we're going to hear this year. I do love an album with something to say, and DunkelNacht say it with irresistible flair. The gauntlet has been thrown down for 2019.

Albums rarely live up to their name in quite so spectacular a fashion as this one does. Unsettling indeed.

Put simply, this is the best tech death album ever released. And that's all I have to say about that.

The Passing Faith in Others The Passing Faith in Others
Presentiment was one of my favourite records of 2014, but listening to this new EP really gives you a sense of how much the band has matured since even that incredible effort. This is some of the most beautiful, haunting, and memorable music I've heard this year, and it's an absolute crime that Dreamgrave isn't yet getting as much attention as they deserve. Well worth the wait!
