  4. At Light's Demise
    by Cistvaen
Somehow both uplifting and despairing in equal measure. I also appreciate the solid mix of ferocity and melancholy, which sets this release a cut above most atmospheric black metal. And some of the solo guitar passages are achingly lovely.
  5. Key XXI: Through the Portal of Serendipity
    by Dusklight
I always welcome new Windkey releases, because Evergreen has a great ear for sounds that can help us look at the world in new ways. Dusklight’s album beautifully evokes the wavering quality of a mirage glimpsed out of the corners of your eyes: looked at too closely, it dissolves; but studied peripherally, it almost becomes real. If we could bring this same sort of playful, distracted attention to bear on other aspects of our lives, who knows how many wonders we might discover?
  6. Enchantment of the Ring
    by Secret Stairways
I love the mix of quiet melancholy and soaring wonder here. Listening makes me feel like I am looking up at the night sky on another world, watching impossible boreal colors dance along the horizon while tall trees sway in the keening wind, and gray-cloaked figures add their own long-dead voices to the joyful lament.
  7. Sky Within Us
    by Various Artists
  8. Realmwalker
    by Atlantean Sword
I appreciate the thoughtful, moody, dreamlike quality of this release, and the sense it conveys of hushed anticipation. Listening makes me want to close my eyes and immerse myself in the lovely, shining visions of a simpler time and place that the music paints.
  9. STILLNESS EP
    by Marla Van Horn
With every moment that passes, the end of existence draws closer; but slowly, almost imperceptibly, one fragile cell’s width at a time falling into ruinous decay with a sigh of relief. At the heart of this inexorable horror lies wisdom, speaking in many voices at once, maddeningly chaotic, yet ever so rarely resolving into a perfect, terrifying vision of climactic clarity glimpsed within a still pool.
  10. Fathoms of Celestial Sorrow
    by Atlantean Sword / Ysbrydnos
Atlantean Sword’s side of this split does a great job conjuring the magic and mystery of REH’s Conan stories. I feel like I’m sitting by the fire in a peat-smoky tavern listening to pulpy-worthy tales of the Cimmerian’s glorious adventures. Ysbrydnos’s side has a lovely shimmering, liquid sound that nicely complements AS’s more epic style, giving Y’s tracks a mystical, slightly creepy underwater feel. I also appreciate their mining of the rich, underutilized treasure trove of Welsh mythology.
  11. The Carrier's Blessing
    by ulk
Listening to Ulk’s lovely woods & wetlands turtle’s eye view dungeon synth always makes me think about the underrated value of the slow and hidden. Moving more deliberately, placing each foot down carefully before lifting the next, we see so much more than if we proceed at a breakneck pace: the precise angle of sunlight that strikes the most jewel-sparks from the water’s surface, or the gentle-furred beings with bright eyes who watch shyly from the verdant shadows.
  12. Between Planes
    by Vyormouth
Beautiful and subtly disorienting dark ambient. Listening makes me feel like I have walked into a room I know by heart, yet it now feels strange; as if everything had been rotated 5 degrees since my last visit. Or watching a landscape and seeing it shimmer, then shift into how it used to look or will look, then back again.
  13. Cimmerian Tales Of Triumph
    by Varvitos
I just finished reading the first issue of Titan Comics’s excellent revival of the much-missed _Savage Sword of Conan_ REH anthology—and I can tell you that this epic dungeon synth EP makes a very worthy soundtrack to reading and dreaming about the exploits of the mighty-thewed barbarian thief, warrior, and king. Looking forward to hearing a full-length from Varvitos!
  14. perdurance
    by convulsing
There is beauty in struggle and pain. I step into the flames and scream as my flesh burns and crackles and blackens again and again and again. Covered with scars, I am made new, watching a tiny star glimmer amidst all the blackness of the universe.

  16. the scaffold
    by manja ristić & murmer
I love how soundscape artists like MJ and PJM can turn field recordings into magic mirrors to help us see the wonder in our everyday worlds. I have never heard a scaffold singing, but now I want to listen! I hear here, too, how the organic and mechanical can merge into something new and mysterious, even transcendent, in the densest urban environments if we open ourselves to that possibility. And what a lovely mix of droning and percussive textures!
  17. Asphalt/Concrete
    by Masayuki Imanishi
Have you ever noticed how much passing traffic sounds like surging ocean waves if you listen with your eyes closed? Or how rain falling on pavement can sound like fire crackling? Or wondered what would happen if you put a sound you heard on one side of the city next to one from the other side? Then you should enjoy this immersive urban audio diary from Masayuki Imanishi that will help you see the Mystery in your own home place with fresh eyes and beginner’s mind.
  18. Hanami
    by jarguna
  19. ashen meadows
    by Morbærsanger
A poignant, tremulous descent into the despair of the trees and all the creatures who depend upon their well-being (including us). Leaves fall like tears, trunks flare up like dying suns, soil screams as it slides off stripped hillsides into the abyss.
  20. The Skull of the Tundra
    by Cave Walker
I appreciate how the longer tracks really make you slow down and pay attention. The first makes me feel the monotonous chill of the wind scraping across the frozen tundra, yet also delight in the sunlight glinting like diamonds on the blowing flakes. The last feels like waiting for the snow to gently cover your entire body, softly entombing you into icy eternity.
